I've been asked many times to do an SBS on my figure painting method but have always forgotten. Now however I've remembered! So Let's start with the figure from Red Zebra for my truck base. First off the obvious which is to check the model for any mold lines or flaws and remove and rectify, then the figure gets a soapy wash followed by primer. After checking for any flaws missed you can then begin painting. For painting I only use acrylics from Vallejo. For this figure it will be mostly civilian clothing which in itself is more of a challenge than military clothing I think. I began with a white wash on the trousers, this will be a base for the denim I will attempt to paint later on. Next I selected vallejo 327 Italian tank crew for the parka and gave it an initial coat. I will apply a further coat of this colour once dry but with a small drop of black added, but more on that next update. The head has also had the beanie hat painted in 306 dark rubber.

Next instalment now and the parka was given a glaze using the green with a tiny drop of black added. This was then brushed on to the parka making sure it didn't pool. The trick is a little goes a long way. This was then followed up by more black added and this was concentrated in all the creases, folds and shadow areas. Finally with more black added to the mix and the paint now a thin wash this was applied to the really deep areas. Being acrylics this process is fast because it's thinned with water it dries in no time.

Thanks chaps, Now onto the jeans and I started by adding shadows using the base blue mixed with black and thinned with water. This was brushed into all the creases and shadow areas. Once happy with the look I again started with the base blue and added 342 highlights flesh to lighten it. A very light dry brushing again helps to even out the lighter tones and highlight all the raised areas. More flesh was added bit by bit and the mix was thinned to a wash and applied with a fine brush on high areas and areas of wear. Again multiple layers went on until I achieved the desired effect. The shoes took all of two minutes to paint as they will be getting some pigments to dust them up so I didn't spend much time on them. Finally the flesh areas can be painted over a base coat of 341 flesh base I added shadows using 343 shadows flesh heavily thinned, again building up the effect. His beard was mixed from 822 German camo black brown and highlighted using 845 sunny skin tone mixed to the brown. Finally sunny skin tone was used to add highlights, thinned with water to the bridge of his nose, above the eyes and checks. This colour works very well for Arabic subjects as I find it gives a more tanned look. So that's basically it apart from a coat of matt varnish and a final application of pigments.
