So, into the deep end we go . This one is way out of my comfort zones, but hey, you only live once . This kit is huge, and I'm so glad I never did get the 1/48 version from Trumpeter. The kits length when built is 94cm, which is about 37 inches . The kit has two instruction books (one for the plastic and the other for the PE) and 832 parts, these are plastic, photo-etch , brass rod, wooden decks and brass gun barrels . You get the choice of 8 different U-Boots, and no I haven't yet decided on which one I shall make. Here's the parts Now before I start this madness, I need to do some planning and make some decisions. 1. There are 346 flooding vents. Do I open these up yes or no? 2. If I open them them up, then I am going to have to add the pressure hull/cabin to the inside. With all those vents open, you are going to have a nice view of the empty interior, and there will be plenty of light going in there also. So how do I make the simulated pressure hull? 3. If the vents are open, I will need to add the mine launch tubes. 4. How the hell am I going to paint this monster? 5. Do i use the wooden deck or not? At the moment I'm leaning towards no, as there is some nice planking detail on the plastic, that can be carefully painted later.

Wow, beautiful and huge thing... lot's of crazy decisions to make indeed, here's another one for you: there are some very nice looking sets of U-boat crew in 1/72 available...... but anyway, that's going to keep you busy for quite a while.. nice purchase..

As you’ve gone for that much PE it’d seem a shame not to drill out the vents. Maybe finding some tube that would roughly fit and then, as the Rolling Stones said, paint it black so it gives you that there’s something inside it without having to do a mammoth scratch build. You could even add some greebles to give what you can see some interest. Of course se you’ll need to ban anyone from getting their torch out!

OMG!!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Has Mrs.B signed off on a U-Boat pen in the living room? Standing by for this one. Also interesting that seven out of the eight actually survived the war. Looks like one of them is still preserved at Kiel. Wow..........

One to follow, how long is this U-Boot once it's built?

That's a build of the year you have there Paul! I'd open the casemate vents up and use some home plumbing drain pipe as the pressure hull with sprue runners to simulate pipe and cable runs. The pipe in available in 38 and 40mm and can be glued with standard poly as it's styrene. As my friend above says once it's painted black you'll know something is there but you won't need to worry about super detail.

I know I bookmarked and "liked" this thread this morning and didn't leave a comment. Truth be told, I was so overwhelmed by this kit that I couldn't think of anything to say.😄 so after taking a nap and recovering somewhat,I will say...SWEET MOTHER OF PEARL. You're a braver man than me PB.👏 I think Jabs has good idea with the vents. Steves is too. You can't see what you can't see. 😎

Hi Paul. Regarding the flooding vents, I would definetely open them up due to the large scale. Painting them for example with black will not do the trick. With your skills it should be child's play to make a inner hull from stryrene sheet and separate it from the outer hull with strips or equivalent. This would give the model a whole lot of depth & realism.
The wooden deck would be nice, but if you prefer painting the existing plastic planks, you should be able to reach a nice result with proper weathering. AK has for example a nice product AK301 DARK WASH FOR WOOD DECKS, but you can use oils etc. There are some nice videos which might help you to make a decision:

Cheers Bert, but that decision is defo not the list I tend to agree with that. The figures will be one of the focal points and not just there to add some interest. Getting then in 1/72 to be the same standard as the sub, rather you than me.

Chaps thank you all joining in, in this crazy expedition of mine . Also thank you all kindly for the tips, hints and videos . I think Steve has the best idea with the pressure hull, but I can't get to the DIY store yet as my back is giving me some serious trouble . Anyway I shall start soon and will begin with those flooding vents
