Anyone use Halfords rattle can primer?
Reason I ask is I can't get a nice line around my glazing masking. It always leaves a thick edge that looks a bit grey.
I asked a member of the club what he does to get such a clean edge and he said he doesn't use primer, he goes straight on with a Tamiya black and then over the top with the colour, the idea of the black first is the canopies were painted black inside and colour on the outside, he said doing the black gives the illusion that the inside is painted black when viewed from the inside. He's canopies are the best I've seen that's why I asked him.
Time and time again my canopy painting is letting me down and the thick grey primer must be the cause
What do you lot do to yours ?

Use both Halfords white and grey primer, usually on masters where I dont want a thick covering, always warm and shake well though

I admit it's great primer and I always warm it up but I can't get a clean edge when I take masking off canopies

I use from The Range store Robbo only because i`m to lazy to go all the way to Halfords...........the Range store stuff works just as good as Halfords and cheaper for a bigger can...........and it`s for plastic, as for a clean line around the canopies maybe just a very, very light mist coat just to basically discolour it or just revert to doing the canopy using an AB.........rattle cans can be a bit aggressive.

The fella at the club, you really have to see how sharp his finish is with no primer

Hi Robbo, I use Halfords grey primer on my builds but I take an extra step with the canopies. I mask them off, frames on the outside and the whole of the inside but leaving the edges open. Then a coat of Halfords semi gloss black over the outside and lower edges.
Attach the canopy with Revell Clear then move onto grey primer over the whole airframe but a bit lighter on the canopy, almost just overspray. Camo paint as normal on top.
Not had a real issue that I can see with grey boarders, any edges look a bit like the sealer used on the 1:1.

Sounds like it could work Steve, I'll try anything for a better finish

On my dragonfly I sealed the masking tape first with Mr hobby gloss rattle can, then I stuck the canopy on before priming.

Your issue is excessive film thickness,Ian. If you feel you need to use primer, just a very light coat,as the Boys have said. The only way to totally get rid of the edge is to not use primer. No primer=no edge. Every layer .of paint that you spray will show to some extent when you peel the masking off.
Like this.......
Hope that helps,Buddy.
