Pete, you may have come up with the answer.

Interesting, perhaps the retarder reacted with the ISO. I only use mr color thinners and don't have a problem so I would suspect that's the issue Thats exactly what i think/thought Pete........when you got to the bottom of the bowl there was like a layer of mushy paint in it.....you could scoop it out with a brush!!!, it was just going thru the nozzle with the paint and blocking it up.......has to be the ISO IMHO

Boots the problem with paint will be the interaction of two non compatible formulas I reckon. I read somewhere that Tamiya paint is not a true acrylic and if mixed with one of those or a thinner or retarder intended for acrylic paint they cause the sludge you experienced. I had the same issue when used AK washable agent. works great with AK and Mig acrylics but doesn't with Tamiya. I am knackered after writing this so I'm off for a kip!!!! bill

Nice tinkering, the decals have sat down nicely The Tamiya paint is an odd one, doesn't like being brushed on but once thinned I find through an AB goes down perfick! Shame you had to find out the hard way about chemical compatibility, but could have been worse, could have caught fire or blown up

Looks very, very cool to me - I can't comment on yer paint issues other than to repeat that I only ever use the matching manufacturers thinner with their own paint and I've never had gunge in the bottom of my bowl.......
