Colors were Red and White. USA changed their over to Black/White or Green and White. The way they were use as I understand it: They would take them and stick them in the ground at a measure distance in front of the tank like a line of fence post. The gunner would line up his sight until it looked like only one pole out there. with this adjustment the azimuth was know and they knew for sure where the gun was pointing. When coordinates were received they would know which direction to adjust to come to bear on the target. Useless information for those interested Tony lee  PS: For DIRECT fire I doubt they would take the time to set the poles but for indirect fire missions on stationary target they would.
