I have a few builds wrapping up in the next week or so...so I figured I'd look around for some side-model projects to go along with some other builds. Paul's Ferdinand got me thinking about my Flakophant build from the old Worx days. I thought it might be nice to try to finish it.
The Flakophant was a Sp chassis for the flak gun, intended for air defense. It used a modified Elefant chassis. The idea was these things would be on-base where they would no be subject to the stresses of battlefield conditions...in other words they were less likely to fry their drivetrains trying to climb a 10 degree incline. I had an Elefant...it's one of the first armor kits I ever bought. I sort of lost interest and it was put away. One of the issues was with the tracks. They had dry-rotted.

I had a half-done Tiger P so I dug it out to check its tracks. I bought this one back when it came out and really didn't care for it. Somewhere...sometime...its turret vanished. So then I got an idea.

I've always wanted to do a StuG VI based on the Tiger 1 chassis. For that, I've had this old Tamiya Tiger 1 steely put to the side.

And I've been undecided on using that or one of these two kits as the basis for the StuG VI Tiger. One is Italeri's Tunisian Tiger. I added the correct tracks (early solid bar), smoke launchers, s-mines, etc. I just never finished it. The other is an Academy Early Tiger. I depicted a survivor vehicle that had made it to the winter of '43. It was given new tracks. ALot of the early bits were left off. And of course I break the driver's hatch while taking that picture. I'll think on that for a bit....and get back to that one day.

So back to the Tiger P. The plan I had toyed with was to use this as a mobile V1 launcher. I was thinking it would be feasible that Porsche could have put forward their own attempt at a StuG VI using their own Tiger P chassis...a pre-cursor to the Ferdinand/Elefant. So I think I'm going to do something like that. I figure an overly complex casemate...unsuited for mass production and the super-long 88. This thing should be brilliantly bonkers and horribly impractical.
As far as the Flakofant, I'll probably officially end that build. I can probably find a use for the chassis and gun in some other build. So I'll probably try to get started on that in a week or two. I've got a Trumpy LAV-25 and M1a2 I'm building for Armorama as well as an Alien ground attack aircraft based on the Aerial HK from Terminator for Model Geek. And I'd like to get assembly done on the KT for the Tiger GB.
