That's an Andy Griffith reference...not sure if everyone in our international community got that.
I decided that the time way right to do a new street scene. I had talked about doing one for my Privateers, a victory parade. I've been playing around with foam core board...and the idea came up again. So I'm going to do a street scene using sheet styrofoam...I've got alot of the stuff that I really need to use up. The plan is pretty open at this point.
I'm sort of winding down on the Privateer thing and the idea for that would be to show buildings for both sides of the street with numerous small sub-stories being played out by the figures. That would make a huge diorama...bigger than the restoration one...and pretty difficult to look at with the buildings in the foreground. I still think it would be the funnest build, but probably not all that family friendly.
Another idea...VALs....yep my little vampire alien gals....or at this point just aliens gals. The idea was an occupied town, years after the invasion. Then I figured I'd hold off and use that idea for another building build I want to do...a Roman Villa inspired estate made from foam core board. For that I'm picturing a Val administration building. You have Val and townsfolk interacting and so forth.
The last option is what I call my Halloween Special. No not zombies and you've already seen I've lost interest in the vampire angle. So what will it be? Hellspawn....Hell on Earth. Gonna need to figure out making a couple dozen demons...I'm liking the design they used in Priest but drop the vampire aspect. I figure a strike team is sent in to retrieve a VIP and must make their way out of the "hot-zone". It's more of a figure-based diorama with some wreckage.
Anyway, until I settle on one I figured I'd get a jump on it and try to get some of the build going. I'm bad about getting stuck on a decision and putting a build on hold for years.
First up is planning. I used graph paper to draw out a pair of three-story shop fronts. Regardless of what Idea I go with, this 3-story section will serve as the back of the diorama. Two story buildings would be used in the forefront to allow you to see the street. Anyway, I tack glued the drawings to the sheet of styrofoam and used it as my template. Before I forget, the building layout is to have the ground floors used for businesses and the upper floors used for "working girls" or apartments...depending on which scenario I go with. That odd extra doorway is to allow independent access to the apartments.
Using the template, I cut the styrofoam with a hobby knife. I removed the graph paper with each cut opening. I saved these to serve as templates for the glass windows. I also left the cut styrfoam pieces in until I was finished cutting. This would keep it from breaking in sections.
Once all the cutting was done, I popped out the opening pieces and vacuumed the stryofoam fits that get everywhere. The openings are pretty rough but should clean up with the window and door molding added. Though the openings are cut I can still modify them if needed.
Another shot with a ISU-152 for scale purposes.
I figure I'll make a serious go at pinning everything down once I get the King Tiger done. Comments are welcomed.

The funny thing is if I go with the Halloween idea there's going to be an underground level. The diorama would end up being around 20-24 inches in height. I really am not sure what I'll do yet. For my outbreak diorama I did back yonder, I left the threat as unseen. To me, armed dudes in hazmat suits is the creepy, unnerving factor. The scene is pretty sets up the situation without needing any real explanation.
So what I'm looking to do is drop the subtlety. A group of soldiers escorting the VIP out. They walk down a ruined street with open crevices. In the buildings and in the caverns below are the devils/possessed. It's dark but it should be self-explanatory. That's what I try to shoot for with my dios. The issue with the Privateer idea is it requires explaining. Otherwise it will pust look like a bunch of odd tanks cruising down a street with "sporting ladies" and other entertainment establishments. Figuring it out is part of the fun.

Thanks. I always liked how that one came out. At the same time, I think I could have done some things better. That diorama was broken down shortly after I finished it. I still have the components stored away so maybe one day I'll remake...except better.
