Chaps I have decided to crack open another kit this year . This is the Border Model Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf.G which was released this year. The kit parts look darned fine, plenty of detail, and a kind of Takomy feel to the sprue layout . Anyway without further ado, I'll get cracking . Lets see how far I get today, will be back later

Steve, Pete, cheers muckers . Steve, I was speaking to Pete ( wandering around Aalst looking for the next pint ) in October about what to build this year, it was then that I said this is going to be on bench for sure . Just didn't think it would be late in the year though . Still 15 days to go and I'm orfe work, so you never know it might cross the line this year yet That's it for tonight, off to watch "the great escape"

Right then, not everything that is shiny and new is always as good as it looks . The problems have kicked in, and they ain't funny and they will certainly be big problems for newbies to the armor game or new to the hobby . The first thing was that the hull roof doesn't sit perfectly on the upper hull, you need to sand the sides back by about 0.3mm all round. If you don't it will balloon up in the middle. The second, the exhaust muffler ends are a very tight fit, I thought I had given them enough time to set, but looking now I can see the buggers have popped out. This has given me a bent exhaust muffler. The third, the maintenance hatches over the transmission need the same sanding treatment before they fit snuggly. The fourth, the mantlet cover needs serious force to fit. Probably very careful sanding could help here. The fifth, the turret halves don't meet up proper at the front. The sixth, the turret side hatches need serious trimming. I removed 1mm from the leading edge of part K17. That's it for the moment, but I reckon the the side skits are gonna give me some fun, and possibly the the tracks too. Still got the gaps to fill and sand, but this is where I am now.

Blimey that doesn't sound too good. No problem for an expert like you though

Ian you're about the fact that it doesn't sound too good . Annoying for a new kit like this, shouldn't bloody happen. They have gotten the tolerances totally wrong, 0 on 0 just don't work. Thanks for the expert bit though , even though I certainly don't class myself as one . I guessed the link and length tracks would be dodgy, so I was more or less prepared . Don't follow the instructions with the single and shorter lengths, I ended up binning both H5 parts ( lead off the rear idler to the top run) and just added single links all the way round the idler to the top run. Getting the tracks on took me over an hour, something that should be done in half that.

Hats off to you Paul, I think I might have resorted to the brick of doom after a snag list lick that! Looks very nice now you’ve kicked it into shape

Well you are getting there mate, perhaps it's an early batch of the kit? Anyway I'm sure you can beat it into submission!

Paul, great choice for your build but sorry you are having all these problems with it. The real PZ IV has some very odd angles on the hull and turret so I guess there is also a lot of room for assembly problems in kit form. I am sure you will beat it into submission.
Regards,
Ian

Well, despite the issues, it looks like you're building this exceptionally well. I see no problems are issues in your pics; so you obviously are capable of beating every discrepancy and making this into another masterpiece.

Many thanks indeed chaps . Pete could be right about it being an early batch, I did buy this as soon as appeared in March. But never-the-less, that's not an excuse for crap fits like these. And yes I did look at the hammer a couple of times the other day . Will be back later with the last bits of the building ceremony

A shame. I'd hope we'd get a very nice new tool Panzer IV line of kits.
