Ian has never built one of my genre before. They said I was underarmed and underpowered but I ended up being really perfect for my role just like my ancestors in WW2, who also did this kind of work. I have been to Bosnia and also have seen Iraq, Kuwait, Somalia and many other far-flung places. Some stranded Albanian refugees and a very drenched F-16 pilot were glad to see me as well. Tom Clancy even wrote about one of my sisters many years ago. We are all gone now but my sisters and I are the backbone of any combat arm even though we don't get alot of attention.
Regards,
Ian

Well gents, for Carl's Tribute build I am going with this since Carl was a USN veteran. This will be my first surface ship build and I will be using the 1/350th Special Edition Oliver Hazard Perry class frigate kit from Academy. This kit comes with full photo-etch and multiple decal options but I will be using Trumpeter SH-60's instead of the kit helos. I gave a few hints in the intro but the Perrys were designed as frigates that could function as convoy escorts, much like the corvettes, cutters and frigates of WW2. The class was somewhat frowned upon, initially, for being underarmed and underpowered. However, they quickly proved their worth in various hot spots around the globe. The USS Reuben James, which is one of the kit decal options, was featured in Clancy's "Red Storm Rising" where it served as a sub hunter and convoy escort during WWIII. However, I will be depicting the USS Nicholas, FFG-47, which had quite a history. She was named for the first CO of the United States Marines, Major Samuel Nicholas. In addition, she was in the same destroyer squadron as the USS Taylor and USS O'Bannon based at Charleston SC. In WW2, all three of these namesakes were Fletcher-class destroyers and their combat records were so incredible Admiral Halsey had all three ships present with the USS Missouri for the surrender in Tokyo Bay. In the late 80's USS Nicholas served as a convoy escort in the Straits of Hormuz escorting tankers in the middle of the Iran-Iraq shootout. She later served in Desert Storm '91 and conducted shore bombardment of Iraqi troops in Kuwait and sank seven Iraqi ships. She also rescued a USAF F-16 pilot who had been shot down. She also was the escort for the USS Missouri and USS Wisconsin and participated in the shoot-out with the Iraqis at Khafji. Later, the Nicholas participated in operations off of former Yugoslavia. At one point she rescued sixteen Albanian refugees who's boat had been rammed and burned by a ferry. In 2003 she docked in Bosnia and was the first ship to do so since 1917 and hosted members of the Bosnian government. Later, she operated in the Med and intercepted a shipment of nuclear reactor parts destined for Libya. In 2010 USS Nicholas was operating off of Somalia and got in a gunfight with Somali pirates and sank one boat and captured another. In 2014 she was decommissioned and stored for potential foreign sales. Although the Perrys serve in multiple foreign navies now, they are all gone from the US Navy. I figured Carl would be right proud of a ship like this so I am going to give it a go. Best wishes, Ian

Thanks guys! I have started on the USS Nicholas and I must say it is a really nice kit. I am doing the kit as a waterline build so I will be experimenting with making diorama water later on as well The hull was pre-scored so a few passes with a knife and the parts were separated. Academy gives you the option to build a Flight I (Short Hull) or Flight III (Long Hull). As USS Nicholas was a Flight III I added the longer stern piece and helo deck for the long hull. I will need just a little bit of filler around the stern piece but that will be an easy fix. I think I will build and paint everything in subassemblies as the only seam work to do is on the hull. Stay tuned, gents. Best wishes, Ian

Thanks guys and yes, a floaty with lots of brass is uncharted territory for me. I had several naval subjects in the stash but I went this one because its basically a block superstructure in monochromatic paint. Wasn't quite ready for the 1/350th HMS Kent (WW2) with full PE and splinter camo. I started on the superstructure work and installed all the vents and ducts on the hangar roof. Can you say "small pieces"?? I did a test fit of the superstructure to the hull and it looks like a good fit so all that will be painted separately and joined later. Regards, Ian
