So another shelf queen that I’m going to try and drag over the finish line now my fear of canopies has receded and I can use what I learnt with the Bristol Beau Fighter.
Out of the box besides a masking set which will help particularly with the turret MG and all its curves. Still some filling (my fault, not the kits) to do before getting the masking done and ready for the primer. The good thing is that I’ve got white primer and half the camo is white so that will save me a bit of time. The one I’m trying to work out is a Tamiya colour match for Dark Slate Grey. I think some Khaki Drab with a little bit of Khaki to lighten it up should be close enough but I also seen a couple of call-outs for a much darker green.
So here’s where we are at.

Welcome Robbo and I'm hoping that I don't have any mishaps which seems to be my thing with aircraft builds.
@mence I kinda didn't choose to build it as I ordered a Lancaster off Amazon and this arrived instead. I did think about returning it but as the reviews where positive and the coastal command version is a bit different, well why not!

So a bit more progress this morning with lots of masking and then primer time. I’m still trying to decide what colour Dark Slate Grey is as there seem to be variants of it between a Khaki Drab and more of a Dark Green. I’m now toying with from Khaki Drab to RAF Dark Green 2.

XF22 RLM02 is a good staring point for Dark Slate Grey, I add a touch of XF1 Black and a drop of XF7 Red until it looks right to me.
I judge it more on the contrast to the other camo colour more that photos as PC/tablet screens differ

I judge it more on the contrast to the other camo colour more that photos as PC/tablet screens differ Thanks Steve, I did see that, or similar, as one of the suggested mixes but I’m still a bit confused as even by the normal standards of variations in what’s the ‘right’ colour it really does vary. I think I’ll take the judging on contrast route instead of getting to hung up on it.

Well I started masking time for the camo and as there's two canopy variants I'm going to give the mask and then cut out the non-mask bit a try.

So then, masking for the dark grey and then the masking for green. That took a bit of time. The mishaps, I knocked off, and lost, one of the little aerials on the tail fins and realised I didn’t drill the holes for some of the antennas. No biggy but must pay more attention next time.

The patience of a saint . Give the masking edges a coat of the dark grey to stop any unwanted bleeding

@paul B, I find it a bit like individual track links, slightly time consuming but at the same time quite relaxing with brief moments of swearing. A couple of things I’ve found useful for me are cutting the tape into relatively thin strips (just makes it easier to work with) to do the outlines and the old trick of internally putting the whole job into sections so you have that now I’ve completed that section mindset. Oh, and the drawing template I bought did come in handy.
I did decide to try my hand at free-handing the main camo masks and that turned out to be easier than I thought and I prefer it to using magic putty. So today is the big reveal or as I also like to call it, find out where you did things wrong.
The wingy thing certainly makes you go through the masking tape at a rate of knots but fear not Hobbycraft is now open again.

I enjoy the masking bit but hate indy track links.. funny ‘in it B) Though for big areas I tend to mask the edgeS and fill the gap with tissue. Looking good fella, can’t wait to see the reveal

Ermmmm ... mostly happy (just a few easy to fit some paint lifting) but I’m not happy with the demarcation lines above the wings. I’ll try and tidy it up so I can get it to state that I think is acceptable as I really don’t want to have to get the AB out again. Overall though still enjoying it a something I’ve learnt, using white flexi masking tape on white primer makes it hard to see exactly what you’ve done!

High contrast painting is always difficult buddy but you’ve made a good start there

High contrast painting is always difficult buddy but you’ve made a good start there Thanks Steve, I’ve left it for the day as I know from the experience that if there’s something that annoys me a bit and I delve straight in I’ll end up making when rose.
