Have been busy back at work, but have managed to chip away at the build. I'm pleased with progress and there's just a bit more finessing to do before i call it done. As I mentioned in my last post, I'd been toying with making a small diorama / vignette to show it off. Mainly because i'd forked out for a load of muds, splashes and pigments!! So it was off to a home ware store which is famous in NZ for constantly running sales, where I picked up a nicely priced picture frame. It was gold, but not for long. After a sanding and a primer coat it was on with some Matt black and Matt varnish. I then dug out a bag of air drying clay that I'd had for some time, and thankfully it was still in good nick as i'd wrapped it ok the last time i used it. So it was on with a bit of landscaping. I'd sketched out an idea and worked to that. I added some trailer tyre tracks and then made the indentations for the gun base so it will be bedded in nicely and not floating. It took about 48 hours to completely dry and it did crack in a few places, but not to worry as it will be caked in mud, and lots of it. I also picked up some resin 2cm ammo cases and some ammo cartridges which will be strewn around. Once i'm happy with the final touches on the gun / base and trailer i'll post the final pics and call it done. As the other updates will be on the diorama, I will start up a new thread in the appropriate section. Here's some pics of where things currently stand. Cheers Mark

Nice idea using a picture frame. I usually use a wooden plate turned upside down.
I’ll give your idea a go next time.

Nice idea using a picture frame. I usually use a wooden plate turned upside down. I’ll give your idea a go next time. It's very hard to find finished boards with routed edges in NZ, so you have to improvise unless you have a router. I'd seen a picture frame used previously so thought i'd try it out also. It's a cost effective option and in this case i've just taken the glass out and put it behind the mdf backing sheet. The dio will sit below the level of the frame so it "frames" it nicely and gives a nice clean edge.

Nice work, I've been using picture frames for years for my bases. Cheap and a good solid base too.
