Hi All As promised from my 20mm Flakvierling 38 Mit Sd.Ah.52 build in the Tracked and armoured section. mho.freeforums.net/thread/2673/20mm-flakvierling-38-mit-sdI've moved across to here as I made the decision to create a small diorama to show off the build. It's set in the Operation Barbarossa theatre in 1943 and the heavy winter is making way for warmer spring days, the snow and ice are disappearing and turning in to slushy, thick mud. The sky's are clearing and the risk of air raids has increased. The scene, shows the deployed Flakvierling after a recent defence of the German lines. Progress pictures to follow. Cheers Mark

The first pics are a copy from the other thread. I decided to make the dio base with a photo frame from a local home ware shop. It was gold, so was primed, top coated with flat black then Matt varnish to seal it all in. I reversed the glass and the MDF . The MDF making a nice base for the Dio and it sits just below the frame height "framing" the layout. The first step was sketching out a few composition ideas until I landed on one I liked. Then it was out with the air drying clay and the sculpting tools. The idea was showing the gun base in place and the maneuvering of the trailer to allow the gun crew to operate. The area will be strewn with the ammo crates and gun cartridges. I've decided against putting figures on this one as I just want to showcase the flak gun and trailer as it's the first Armour build for some time and i'm using it as an opener for the upcoming Tiger build. The first pics are of the base after the clay was dry and the final coat of matt black applied. I then put on the pieces to check the fit and that they were bedded into the base. Next part is the fun bit, mud glorious mud. Cheers Mark

Well apart from having to work this morning (Saturday), I managed to get started on the base weathering. The first step was using some artists acrylic paint to create a layered base colour. The three colours were Raw Sienna, Raw Umber and Burnt Sienna. The mud colours and grass effects used are from Vallejo and are Brown mud and crushed grass, The main base coat is Light Earth Brown from Ammo / Mig. All are acrylic based. I've never used any of these products before, so this was going to be lots of experimentation and fun. The base coat was set down using the Light Earth Brown. It really is thick and stodgy and takes a little bit of getting used to, but it does create some great texture. I experimented with some Ammo grass mat, but found it was too thick, so I had to do a bit of trimming to remove the matting. It looks very green and the plan was to muddy it up to help it blend in. I also worked on additional layers to create the wash over as the trailer tyres created ruts. Next up i mixed some Brown Mud in with the base layer to start creating some depth over the whole base and concentrating around the tyre furrows. I then started with the crushed grass applying it randomly across the base. It was also worked along tyre furrows to try and replicate the turned over ruts. When that was dry i moved to Ammo/Mig "Damp Earth" and thinned it down with enamel thinner to not quite wash consistency. I worked on the shadowing around the furrows and in the recesses of the tyre tracks. Once that was dry I used some AK "Wet Effects" on one of the tyre ruts to see how it would look. In the last two pics, the tyre track on the left has the wet effects applied. All in all its been full on experimentation this afternoon. I've really enjoyed the playing with texture and colours. At first I was a bit unsure but as the different layers have combined it's starting to come together. I'm impressed by the crushed grass, even though it's a lot glossier than I thought it would be. However after a while i thought it looked ok and will work nicely with the thawing / wet ground. I have ordered some snow products , which should arrive early next week. They will be used to create some thawing snow to finish things off. If i have time tomorrow, then i'll do a bit more deepening the furrows by creating more shadowing. I also have some AK Puddles liquid and might do some experimenting before hitting the base. Has anyone else used the mud products before? Any tips or feedback would be welcome. Cheers Mark

That looks bloody good Mark . I haven't used any of those products before, the only similar thing I have used is the Vallejo Ground Texture. I was quite pleased with how it looks on the Mexas dozer blade.

The ground work looks incredibly realistic. You really captured the look of wet, muddy terrain. Well done, sir.
Best wishes,

Hi All Just a quick update this evening, as I didn't get much time during the day. I managed to add some speckling across the base using a mixture of the various Ammo splatter mud colours. The effect is very subtle and hard to pick up on camera, but it does add some colour variation and create a less flat monochrome surface. Next up I mixed an Abteilung 502 earth mud tone oil wash to add more shadow depth the tyre furrows. Then lastly going over the tyre tracks and soon to be puddle hole with AK Wet Effects. On a scrap piece of plastic which I've been trialing the mud colours I added some of the AK puddle liquid. I have to say it's very impressive stuff. the trick is to build it up with multiple thin layers to create a very convincing depth. Photos will follow once I've applied to the base. So, I'll head off for the evening with a few pics of progress, enjoy.... and have a happy days modelling out there, wherever you may be and what ever your lockdown situation may be. Cheers Mark

Hello All, Well, it's been a little while since the last post, due to life, work and the heat. The last week has been stinking hot (35 - 37C) and the heat really saps your energy and modelling isn't high on the list. Thankfully, we're having a few days around 22C so i've headed back into the modelling room. First up, i created a sample board to do some trialing of snow / ice products. After working with some AK, Vallejo and deluxe products, singularly and mixed, I settled on a combo of AK Snow and Deluxe Materials Icy Sparkles. To me they were the most realistic looking products. So. it was time to get to work. I worked over a few days doing a little section at a time as I didn't want to over do it as can be done if you do it in one sitting. After the doing the sample board, I identified the way the Ak snow product changes as it dries is quite interesting. When you apply it, it feels like you've overdone it, but as it dries it partly dissolves and you get that nice mix of solid and melting snow. It also has a slight sparkle to it, like it's frozen. Adding some Icy sparkles also gives a nice glint to the snow. As the diorama is set in Spring and there's still cold nights, frosts are still happening. The puddle in the track and the other larger one were created using AK Puddles, built up over multiple layers. The when I felt it had enough depth I added a sprinkling of icy sparkles to make it look frozen over. Then I thought, well, they'll probably be some ice formed on the trailer and parts of the Flak. The pics below show some icy sparkles added to part of the trailer (Left front arm). The pics don't really pick it up that well, but as you view it from different angles the light creates a nice sparkle just like it has a layer of ice. All being well, I should just about have this completed by the end of the weekend. Standby for more pics showing progress. Cheers Mark
