I was a tank crewman in 83-87, and that wasn't the case then. The CPU was only used by the coammander, as he needed to change frequencies between troop level /squadron level/ and regimental level, using two radio sets. So the CPU was used to switch between the two sets and nothing else.
I don't how the set up was in the mid 70's, but I still cannot see reason for the whole crew to have them.

Hmmm a veritable can of worms this. Possibly in the early 70's they may have all had the CPU but I can't see why they would. Done some digging and found a few pics that might be useful, first a chieftain and you can clearly see that the loader does not have the CPU, And a very early challenger with crew in bonedome, commander does have CPU, crewman does not. Probably the best shot I have at hand without going through my library, which I'll do today. I'm not saying your friend is wrong but perhaps that was the practice in his unit during his time there. The British army is notorious for doing things at a unit or regiment level that other regiments would not do. Another thing to note is that the tamiya chieftain had crew figures who all have the CPU in place and so did some verlinden crew figures. The new valkyrie figures with bonedome do not but some accurate armour sets do have all crew cast with something that COULD be a CPU on them and some do not. Perhaps the best way around this is to cast the commander with CPU as he most definitely would have used it and supply a couple more for people to add to the other figures if they so wish. Straps can be easily made with tape or similar.

Thanks Peter, it is very confusing, thanks for all your help mate. Thing the best way forward is to do all three figures with CPU (although still have the moulds of torsos without them, so either way both options covered until I can get some clarity, may have to get in touch with Bovington today :-)

Paul instead of causing yourself headaches, why don't you just cast the CPU's separately? That way everybody can add what they think was correct, or know what was correct for their units It doesn't matter if cast them flat, as the backs won't be seen when glued in place. Now lets talk about cap badges and mottos...... Naughty step time I do believe

Thanks Paul, currently working an a plan :-), trouble is doing the CPU separately, would mean adding straps. The email I was sent, have been back over it and thing my friend may have made a mistake, just waiting his replay. Cheers mate

Hi Pete, have been over the email, and suspect I got the wrong end of the stick (or wrong end of the comms units) it appears as though the other two chaps wore a Prezzel??? see photo below. One the original email he'd included a photo of a close up CPU. Think this will make more sense. Just made the mould for the mics, although don't know if Ill get any casting / sculpting done tomorrow (wife goes in for hip replacement 0715hrs Thursday morning) However, the hospital think she will be in for 3 nights, so that's 2.75 days modelling/sculpting/casting.... then a 0.25 days having a tidy, getting rid of the pizza boxes etc. :-) Think were nearly there now :-) Has anyone ever worn one of there's? just wondering if they were on a harness, of it they just hung suspended from the head phones, also guess the green box would have been mid chest if hanging (if I'm wrong please let me know :-)

The picture I sent you via email is the earlier version which is very similar to the CPU in that it too had a harness. Hope it all goes well for the better half mate and enjoy your pizzas!
