Hi Everyone. After my Gundam Tallgeese and U-Boot last year it's time to do something German again. I decided to overhaul a shelf queen which sits on the shelf for many, many, many moons now. In 2011 I bought this kit from MilMod member Boo (I know his first name is Mark, but can't remember his last name. I do remember that seeing his build article of a Ferdinand/Elefant made me join the late Military Modelling Forum and start this great hobby in 2010). The Panther was built as a 'what if' tank and never got painted. I did bring it to some modelling shows in Belgium though and received a bronze gong in the category 'naked kit'. It was also my first model which was published in a magazine (Art of Modelling magazine) - it was a photo in a show report. So, good memories. However, I think the Panther F wasn't up to standard anymore so I decided to overhaul the kittycat. I gave the hull some more cast texture, added some weldmarks around details, enhanced the shell impacts, sanded down the cleats or whatever you call those raised details on the tracklinks ( ), replaced the damaged pe bin (molten plastic) by a soldered etch one, and added some sandbags. I do need to remove some tracklinks because the tracks are a tad too saggy, but other than that, I think she's ready for a bath and some paint. Well, that's it for now ^^

How did the tracks get so saggy? Did the model shrink over the years?

That is one cool looking cat Wouts . You're right about the tracks, at a guess I'd say 3 per side must go

How did the tracks get so saggy? Did the model shrink over the years? Nah, I cannibalised the old ones for my Panther A and I think I just built two trackruns without fitting them afterwards or before, can't remember. So these I found assembled in the cabinet...spares me some work. I think I need 83 links per side or something like that, so as Paul states, I'll remove some and it will be ok

Thanks for the great reply chaps I like the additional roof armour, got a set myself somewhere? Look forward to seeing you get some colour on this
I remember the Ferdinand too….I think it was Mark Chisholm or something like that?
Hi Si, Mark Chisholm was another talented chap but it wasn't him. Turns out Bootsey remembered the chaps' namen indeed: Mark Simmon(d)s. The Panther received it's bath today, so hopefully I can start spraying somewhere this week ^^

Guess who received a coat of primer Large etch parts like the skirts and armoured screens first got a coat of Mr Metal Primer (applied by brush), as well as the gun barrel. But - although it should be self levelling - that didn't turn out well. Both on the gun barrel as on the sideskirts the surface was very irregular. So those will need to be sanded and primed again.

Looks good under a coat of primer.

Black primer is always the best I reckon, it gives the following colours more depth . Shame about the not-so-self-levelling metal primer though, but nothing an expert profi like yourself can't sort out

Guys, glad you like the black Panther. Well, not so black anymore actually I gave the kittycat it's basecoat. In the past I used Tamiya Dark Yellow or Buff but I don't want all my models look too much the same in tone. So I tried to mix my own Dark Yellow out of three Tammi colors. No exact ratios though, I'm not that kind of chap, I prefer to muddle around a bit until it looks alright The hull received a more opaque color and the basecoat on the turret is a bit more blotchy. Since it came from a different factory and because of the progress of the war late '45/early '46 production and finish were a bit rushed. The engine deck hatch and the extra armour on the turret roof received a basecoat of oxidised metal. I used Tamiya Hull Red for this. The frontal extra armor also received light passes of the red oxidised color, but I won't remain that way. Hopefully not too long before we can start adding camouflage. My three weeks of holiday are ending next week Monday (yuk) but let's see what we can do in the meantime ^^
