Joe, which pigments does the shop have?
Vallejo, Mig and AK are good, they are very fine indeed and work well for building up heavy grime.
VMS are also good and come in different grades, fine, middle and coarse. You also get more for your money
with these.
For heavy build up like crusted mud, you'll need a fixer too. Although for this you can use matt or gloss
top coats to make a paste, it will then set rock hard.
Have a look at youtube for ideas, specially the Night Shift, or the VMS tutorials.
