Thanks chaps. Agree with you Pete, small parts count and consequently simplified detail but whats there is quite crisp. Tamiya was way ahead of the pack back in the '70s. I'm reminded of the Glencoe BTR-50 aboration- 44 pieces for a 1/35 kit with "detail" so mind-numbingly soft or downright wrong. Still built it though... I've also just realised, I've built it with breach-block open but the actuation lever is in the closed position, though not that anyone could tell from normal viewing distance. Noted for next time.

Those early Tamiya kits were indeed very ahead of their time and still hold up nicely, to this day.

It's the front most fixed splinter shield. I'll fix it in place once the pinwashes etc have been done. Otherwise access might be an issue.
