For a number of years, I’ve had a fascination with the Piranha family of vehicles from the Swiss manufacturer MOWAG and MilMod veterans may remember I set myself a task to build up a collection and build as many of them as I can. I had made a reasonable start but in recent years my modelling was pulled elsewhere. Nonetheless, I thought that joining here I should resurrect the idea and get on with it.
Piranhas are available in 4×4, 6×6, 8×8, and 10×10-wheel versions. There are numerous variants within these versions, giving different degrees of armour protection and several kinds of turret, for use in a variety of roles. Piranha derivatives have been assigned roles as troop transports, command vehicles, recce vehicles, fire support vehicles, tank trainers, ambulances, engineering/ recovery vehicles and police vehicles.
At the time I started this there were 61 variants on the global stage with 29 variants available in it form. This has no doubt grown on both fronts and it is extremely unlikely I’ll get them all done but I do have q pile of 16 so I’ll see what I can do. I’ll post the first one up shortly… hope you enjoy the show.
Stand by for action!

I thought I'd set the scene with a couple of completed builds. At the end of the Millennium, the U.S. Army perceived a gap between its light forces, capable of swift deployment but lacking staying power and their heavy forces, which had immense power, but took too long to deploy. To close this gap as well as to experiment with new tactics, General Eric Shinseki, the Army Chief of Staff, began a transformation process that would field medium-weight brigade combat teams at the start of 2003. The Army goal was to make these brigades light enough to deploy anywhere in the world in 4 days. Initially, these brigades would supplement the light and heavy forces and then in the subsequent 20 to 30 years, would change the shape of the entire force making it medium weight, with the ability to deploy by air anywhere in the world. Subsequent studies concluded that the Stryker Brigades would be unable to deploy by air or sea from bases in the United States to key regions in 4 days. Deployment times ranged from 9 days (Colombia) to 21 days (Afghanistan). The main weakness would be the air-bridge and even if unlimited numbers of aircraft were available, airlift would still be constrained by the condition of receiving airfields in most scenarios. Further planning showed that in some scenarios, the brigades could deploy as rapidly with sealift but still fall well short of the 4-day goal. However, using combinations of airlift and fast sealift to move forces from forward bases or prepositioned sites, forces could reach key regions in 5 to 9 days and most of the globe could be covered in two weeks — a great improvement over historic deployment times for motorized forces. First one up is this M1126 Stryker IFV which is one of a family of vehicles based on the GM LAV III 8 x 8/Piranha LAV III, equipping the US Army's Stryker Brigade concept. The Infantry Carrier Vehicle provides protected transport and, during dismounted assault, supporting fire for the infantry squad. The Stryker has full-time four-wheel drive and selectively eight-wheel drive and weighs approximately 19t which carries an infantry squad with their personal equipment. On paved roads the vehicle can attain speeds of 62 miles per hour (100 km/h) without a governor and 35 miles per hour (56 km/h) with a governor. It has a Protector remote weapon station with a universal soft mount cradle, which can mount either a .50 caliber M2 Browning machine gun, a 40mm MK19 grenade launcher or a 7.62×51mm NATO M240 machine gun. It is also armed with four M6 smoke grenade launcher clusters. With the increase of cyber and remote capabilities on the battlefield there are a number of upgrades planned to keep the Strykers at the forefront of the Stryker Brigades capabilities until 2040.

Si, You aren't far off. it was 'The Parade of Shame' It started at 37 unfinished builds and I got it down to 2 before the demise of MilMod. I'm back up to double figures once more and the less said about 'The Airfield of Ignominy' the better... that is probably in the region of fifty-ish builds. Andy

Andy Lol…….I was miles off but close if that makes sense Good on you for getting so many builds over the finish line, even if it’s since increased! I got a box on top of the fridge with a few builds ‘to finish’ happens to us all

It was an emotional journey that's for sure and I blame the demise of MilMod for me not completing it. No excuses this time round though

good afternoon Chaps, Launching back into this I had some serious dusting to do before getting any paint applied to the next one. This one is another M1126 IFV but this time it is the AFV Club kit and I decided to arm it with a 40mm grenade launcher rather than the .50 Cal. The Trumpeter ones are nice but my personal preference is for the AFV Club kits. Here we go... 2 x Basecoats of dark green Once cured I clear coated it for the decals and got them on with no issues at all. Then unfortunately, in a fit of clumsiness it slipped out of my hand and as I saved it I broke off the LHS light guard. despite 15mins+ hunting for it I could only find half so I had to use some .30" plastic rod to make a new section. It fought me but I managed to get it to look reasonable. Mud next...

As the fleet grows I will use slightly different finishes. I wanted a slightly muddier look on this IFV. Stage 1: Oil paint mixed with some childrens play sand was used for the first layer to apply some texture. The colour looks a bit bright but it won't matter once the various layers go on. Stage 2: Paint stippling. I did alternate layers of Vallejo Chocolate Brown for depth of colour followed by Tamiya Flat Earth for a realistic earthy tone. This I repeated three times, all done wet on wet. Stage 3: a mist squirt coat of Tamiya Wooden Deck Tan from underneath at an angle to represent mud splashes. The BluTac discs were left on during this first dusting layer because I didn't want to obliterate the colour on the wheels. Stage 4: The Tyres were painted in German Grey and then dry brushed with Flat Earth. Once they were dry they were fitted to the wheel hubs and then a final dust coating applied with the BluTac discs removed. Stage 5: Brushing Flat earth into the tyre treads. A final dry brush of german grey onto the contact surfaces will be done right at the end. Some all round pictures next.
