Thank you all kindly for the comments chaps  . Ian, I start off painting the tools matt black. Then I add stripes of Vallejo 71.077 wood, leaving some black stripes showing through. When dry I do the same thing again using Vallejo 71.075 Sand (Ivory), when that is dry they get a thin wash of AK Track Wash to blend the colours in  .

Yep. I always had trouble trying to replicate wood grain in 35th. I will definitely try this.
