Fantastic looking Chieftain. Not to divert the thread but I am planning on doing a Mk. 10 from 5th Inniskilling Dragoon Guards very soon. What are the best colors to use for this camo scheme? (namely the green....I guess black is black)
Regards,
Ian

Ian I find tamiya xf65 field grey is an excellent match for the green. It's not actually grey! As for the black I almost always hand paint the black for a hard edged pattern which is what you mostly see in ref pictures. I use a mix of Vallejo black and dark rubber as black on it's own is too stark.

All it's asking for now is a mud bath Pete. Awesome, as usual.

Thanks guys, with the base for the bulldog sorted I've been experimenting with ground work for the Chieftain. I will be using a large tamiya base and want to have the model going over a stubble field. To this end I've done a small test piece using VMS's smart mud system. This consists of a resin, texture and an activator. You can get various effects with it from wet mud to dry mud just by varying the amount of resin and texture used. For dry mud it's a 50/50 mix of both. You mix it then add the activator until it's very stiff to mix. Spread it out next and then using whatever you want you can add texture, ruts, wheel marks, or whatever. I used a brush to stipple the surface and then smoothed a section as well. Left overnight to dry the effect looks ultra convincing and the colour is really good too. No need to paint as it has a matt finish, just a possible dusting with pigments or a wash for depth. You can even use it on models to add mud on the running gear etc. As it's very stiff when applied I think it should be very easy to add cut bristles for the stubble too. Also being resin based it shouldn't crack and it should stick to whatever surface you apply it to like a limpet. So full steam ahead for this I think.
