Well I have my pick for the Movie Star GB. I had thought about doing the Monogram 1/72nd B-36 from "Strategic Air Command" with Jimmy Stuart but with the KA-3B in progress I just don't have the operating space on the workbench for something like the B-36. I am going with my original plan; the Academy 1/35th scale "AH-60L DAP Blackhawk" kit which is actually an MH-60L as the "AH" designation was not adopted. I am going to build "SUPER 68", an MH-60L from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, from the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993 and she had a prominent role in Ridley Scott's "Blackhawk Down" film. SUPER 68 bore the nacelle art of "The Razor's Edge" and was the designated CSAR bird for the Mogadishu operation. SUPER 68 was the bird that dropped a Delta Team, under fire, at the crash site of SUPER 61, CW3 Cliff Wolcott's MH-60. Cliff Wolcott and his co-pilot were killed. The Delta team and the medics stabilized the survivors of Wolcott's crew, inside the wreckage of SUPER 61 and were able to hunker down and link up with the other Delta operators and Rangers that fought their way to the crash site. SUPER 68 took an RPG hit during that drop and had to limp back to the base. Actor Jason Hildebrandt plays CW3 Dan Jollota, the pilot of Super 68, in the film. SUPER 68 is now on display at the United States Army Aviation Museum. I will be using Cobra Company's excellent after-market decals as they are the correct shade of Olive Drab. Academy provides a sheet that is yellow, for whatever reason so I will not be using those. I will have to make some modifications to the build to depict her as she appeared during the Mogadishu fight: 1) No in-flight refueling probe 2) Pilot and co-pilot cabin doors removed 3) IR plume detectors removed on the nose 4) Olive Drab armor plate on the cabin floor. 5) No aux. fuel tank in the cabin 6) No stub wings fitted 7) Call sign number painted on the sliding door window

Cool subject and great to see one in big scale. Long been fascinated with operation gothic serpent and in particular the blackhawk down incident. Always wanted to model super 64 Mike Durant's ride. Watching with interest.

Watching with interest. Thanks, guys! Yes, Pete, such a sad story regarding Durant's bird. There was an exhibit at the Airborne and Special Operations museum at Fort Bragg here in North Carolina regarding the downing of Super 64. Some of the wreckage from 64 was featured in the display. Apparently it was a limited timeframe for the exhibit (two years or so) so it may not be there anymore.

Well, it's time to get "SUPER 68" kicked off. I started by removing the pilot and co-pilot doors from the fuselage sections. Academy was kind enough to score the doors on the inside of the fuselage so a few passes with a blade was enough to get them cut out. My next step was to work on the floor armor plating. The 160th SOAR birds in Somalia apparently had olive drab armor plating added to the floor. I found a build on another site where the modeler was working on an MH-60 from Somalia so I used his build as my reference for the floor plates. I used sheet stock and scribed the panels. I then drew on the areas which will be drilled out to accommodate the holes in the floor for the various mounting points for different types of equipment in the cabin. I still have to do floor armor for the pilot and co-pilot stations and some vertical armor for the crew chief stations. Just a test fit in the pics.
