I had a fun paint session at the bench today and I got the top coat applied to the SBD. I started off with a pre-shading undercoat of Model Master Intermediate Blue (the Light Blue paint of the later USN Tri-Color Scheme). I then applied the actual top coat of USN Blue Gray, which is much bluer and closer to RAF PRU Blue. SBDs, like F4Fs, were notorious faders so I went over the USN Blue Gray with some spots of Life Color Ocean Gray which had been heavily lightened with some Flat White. I also masked off the fabric control surfaces and painted those with the lightened Ocean Gray mixture so they look suitably faded. I then noticed something regarding the build and I am going to have do some slight scratch building later. The Accurate Miniatures version is packaged as a SBD-3 from Scouting Two off the Lexington. Although they were -3s, the aircraft in this squadron still featured the single .30 cal mount for the rear gunner. Most -3s had the twin .30 configuration, including the one I went to build from Operation Torch off the USS Ranger. Accurate only supplies one .30 in the kit so I dug through the spares box and I found enough gun parts to fabricate a twin .30 mount.

Thank you, gents! Yes, the SBDs off the Ranger were pretty tired by 1943. I think even getting the Helldivers next, was a relief.
