Starting to look a bit like a Spitfire now under a coat of Halfords primer. This is the first 'fault finding ' layer, and it worked Micromesh at the ready ...

First coat of paint, home mix of Tamiya XF-2 white with a tiny amount of XF-7 red. There's a lot of talk about the colour of these Spitfires, they were not the PR pink used on the factory photo reccy aircraft but painted in the the field with a mix of white and the red used for insignia. The ratio was stated to be 40:1 but if you do that with Tamiya you end up with a VERY pink pink ! The red pigment must be very strong. So using my favourite Mk.1 eyeball I mixed something that looks about right in 1/32. The camera struggled with the colour so I had to put a white swatch of paper next to it. Then the aircraft looks pinkish and the the paper whitish This is the affect I was going for accepting that the picture is allegedly an early colour slide and maybe entirely wrong! (reference only) Here's what I've ended up with:
More when I can .

Decals applied, these are all from the spares box and represent an aircraft used in France '44. The airframe number is fictional as is the code but reference is limited so who knows ... There is a decals set out there but it costs £11 and it has different sized roundels on wing and fuselage which photos show is incorrect. These Spitfires were field painted and the markings were not standard RAF specs. The wing roundel was smaller than normal and looked to be the same size as the fuselage..but.. the fuselage roundels were also non standard. They looked to have had the white and yellow painted over with blue. The only way I could do this was by applying a 1/48 bomber wing decal over the center of the Revell 1/32 underwing decal that I used as the fuse marking. No stencils are visible in pics so that's a blessing Here's a wartime pic for reference. This is a great example of why we can't trust photos.. the roundels look to be reversed at first , the red looks to have been dark blue and the blue to be red , especially when you compare to the more normal black and white pic of a standard Mk.IX. Maybe the film and developing struggled with the tonal difference against the pink? For reference only
Nearly there now!
