Used the oil dot method a few times, myself, to varying degrees.
It just depends on how much you take off.

Thanks Boots, I want to make progress today but the weather is sublime for family action, read : a walk in nature and having a beer or two at the airfield.

Jeff,Ian, Boots and Paul as always many thanks to keep me going. The gun mantlet cover is a superbly molded part showing the folds just like the real deal...but no canvassy texture. I think I have not completely succeeded but many hours of sweat, blood and ugly words later I call this cursed part a day.

Oh wow The effort, blood, sweat and naughty words, which you have put into that, was certainly worth it Guy-meister I'm going to torture you some more now . How did you do it?

Haha Paul, no problem. I gave it a brown base colour a while ago (Vallejo Air). Yesterday I tried to paint light and dark shades with the acrylics but it wasn't looking good enough. I thought I could give it a shot with a thinned dark oil wash to save it but nope it went from bad to worse so I removed the wash (that worked without damaging the acrylic paint, jeeeej!). Today I re-started with a Tripel Karmeliet as an ouverture to the works.🍺 I then painted a canvas look by fine vertical and horizontal brush strokes using the very tip of the brush. It consumed more than two hours of my benchtime but it was instantly rewarding. I used different shades of pale greens and brownish greens. I then sprayed on Tamiya matt clear, thinned with lacquer thinner. Once dry I carefully applied a heavily thinned buff to kinda pull the shades together. A thin dark wash was then subtly brushed on. In the shades of the folds I applied a slightly thicker wash, but subtle enough so it didn't pop too much. I finished by accentuating the seams a little. I'm sure there might be a chance I can keep on improving the outcome but I'm equally good at ruining my done efforts so I've decided to be ok with it.

Boots, no brotha, your M18 kicks bottom like crazy! We all have our own style and that's perfect as it would be boring to create identical looking kits.

Guy, that one heck of a method for making the canvas look. I think I might give it a go one day.

Thank you chaps! It was time to get going with the wooden parts finishing. I also lifted the shades of the folded mg tripod on the rear deck.
Every modeller has his own tricks to paint wood and this is how I try to do it : -I start with a coat of a light, warm brown mixture (cam pale brown + brown sand + white, Vallejo, 45/45/10 ratio) brushed on. -Then gloss clear was airbrushed on. -Once dry I brushed on a thick oil wash consisting of burnt umber + ultramarine blue. -After 20' I gently rubbed the wash off using an old brush (see pic). It left the wash in the crevices I made with a file. It also "drew" extra wood grain. You can remove as much as you like. I hope it works for you chaps, you should try it.
