I have really been wanting to build a Mosquito here lately so I have decided to take on the Airfix Mk. XVI reissue. My intention is to build a Mossie with the bulged bomb bay, wide prop blades and two stage Merlin engines. Stay tuned...... Ian

So I decided to expand this project into a dual 1/48th Mosquito build and I am going to throw a Tamiya 1/48th Mossie into the mix. The reason being, the other Airfix Mossie kit I am building contains parts for the gun nose FB. VI so I am going to use those parts to convert the Tamiya Mk. IV into the a gun-nose maritime striker. I am going to use Kits at War decals for these to depict the following: Airfix Mossie---Mosquito Mk. IV series II which had the enlarged bomb bay, narrow prop blades (from Tamyia kit) and the long two stage Merlin engines. The Airfix Mk. XVI kit supplies all those components except the narrow blades. This plane will be a Ocean Grey/Dk. Green over Black Pathfinder, AZ*H, from 627 Squadron. Tamiya Mossie---This one will be a FB. VI gun nose Maritime striker from 235 Squadron, W*3, from the Banff Strike Wing. This Mossie will be in Extra Dark Sea Grey over Sky camo with full invasion stripes. It will have the wide blades, gun nose and wing-mounted rockets. Here is the cockpit for the Airfix Mk. IV series II. I added wiring to the back of the instrument panel and straps to the seats. Some wiring was added by the radio sets as well. Then I moved on to the fuselage sections and painted the various panels and boxes: Following that, I moved on to the Tamiya FB. VI conversion. I used the Airfix cockpit floorboard and instrument panel for that since the gun nose interior is different than the glass nose. I also added some straps and wiring to this cockpit as well. Once that was done, the Airfix gun nose was mated to the Tamiya fuselage and the fit was actually reasonably good. Both fuselages were then assembled and cemented with few fit problems. So grab your Citronella Candles and stay tuned for more Mosquitos. Ian

Dunno about citronella candles, I use whiskey to keep the mossies away . Ian, you are totally mad my friend , but I do like the idea of private dual . I am now watching with even more interest .

I built a Tiffy with the invasion stripes, I painted the black on first then masked the stripes off. I went back over the masked stripes with black then painted the white. This way stopped any white bleeding under the masked areas . Sorry for the hijack, but at least can see the result

Beautiful Paul! Now you are making me want to build the Typhoon. Invasion stripes on the RAF Ocean Grey/Dk. Green scheme always look sharp......just something about it. Thanks for the tip on the stripes! Happy modeling, Ian

Great kitbash Ian, making something you can’t buy is always pleasing Nice Tiffy Paul, spraying white over black helps prevent tonal crush caused by the high contrast of black and white too
