As indicated in the USS Nicholas thread I encountered a significant roadblock in that build so I am moving on to Plan B and this one also has significance for Carl. Paul put those of us state-side in contact with Mrs. Fisher last year as she was trying to get some of his model stash to a good home. Mrs. Fisher was kind enough to send me several from Carl's collection so I am choosing this one for the Tribute Build as I think Carl would have liked to see this one come together. This is an original issue Monogram F-101B in mint condition and I will be using Eagle Strike decals for the markings. These Monogram Century Series jets are fine kits and their cockpits and wheel bays still rival most resin sets to this day. I think I will go with the second marking option depicting a Voodoo from the 84th FIS out of Oxnard AFB, Ca. I am going to need a big shelf for this because the Voodoo is a massive fighter plane. Stay tuned!

This is an outstanding plan B, I'm following for sure. I'm glad to see one of Carl's models being built.

Thanks, Marco! I made some headway on the Voodoo this week. Monogram provides a really nicely detailed cockpit so this was built OOB and painted Dark Gull Grey. It actually gets installed after the fuselage halves are joined by inserting it from underneath via the weapons bay. The fit was perfect and no issues there. I then got the huge fuselage section joined and that was trouble-free as well. I got the wings on next and there was a slight gap on both sides but I remedied this by taking a large piece of masking tape and stretching this from one wingtip, across the fuselage top, to the other wingtip which basically pulled the wings in tight to the wing root. The joint was cemented with MEK and allowed to cure for a three days and there was no gap after I removed the tape. Monogram provides a fully functional rotating weapons bay underneath which carries AIM-4 Falcons on one side and the Genie nuclear tipped goodies on the other. Although a cool feature, I am just going to display the Genies so I glued the bay in place. I also started work on the backdate mods which are outlined on the Eagle Strike Decal sheet. All beacons and antenna were removed from the spine and an additional beacon was removed from the belly. I also started work on sanding off the "slime lights" which were for the ANG birds later on in the Voodoo's career. The NACA vent on the nose gets deleted and will be replaced with some kind of flush mount vent but I am still trying to get a good photo of what that actually looks like. Apparently lots of Voodoos just carried one drop tank, asymmetrically, on normal operations so I think I will go with one tank to give it a different look. I have started sanding so I am getting close to primer time. Best wishes, Ian

Thanks Paul! So I encountered something I had not run into before with plastic. Evidently the plastic had become somewhat brittle with age and the Extra Thin liquid CA I used was actually too hot and in places the plastic actually flaked away or chipped off. That was why I ended up some strange gaps. I switched to MEK only for the rest of the build so I just have a few places to fill but it should be an easy fix.
Regards,
Ian
