A few of you have asked if I can do a step by step guide to painting my Games Workshop minis... So here it is... First stage is construction, like all plastic kits, a bit of clean up, dry fitting, but you have choices on load out and positioning. I’m going to skip ahead to the pre-paint stage.... The following picture shows the first few stages, (from left to right): Construction is completed; main colour priming, in this case a red base coat as the model’s main armour is red; having applied all of the main base colours. In more detail, the base colours applied: Next stage will be to apply shades/washes to the various base colours... (More next time)!

So, shades... These are basically diluted colours, similar to the enamel washes that we use for armour/aircraft/etc... So for this model, I’m using the following: The Agrax Earthshade (earthy brown) is the one that is applied to the largest areas here. The others are used in much smaller areas. The Nuln Oil is applied to the silver based metallics. This is the Sepia applied to the front cloth, as you can see it’s quite translucent. I don’t want it to pool, so it’s applied lightly and built up. Once all the shades are applied they are left to fully dry, about 40 minutes. More to follow...

Now that the shades are dry, I’ll sort the face out... I start off with a touch of white to the eyes... Then I add a stripe of black for the pupils... as you can see I’ve started on the brow and worked down... The overrun isn’t an issue, as long as the black lines are the same for both eyes. Now I retouch the eyelids, top and bottom, with the original base skin colour... Then add a slightly lighter skin tone to the raised areas of the face... Then a further highlight to the most raised areas.. Then I add progressively lighter shades to the hair... Now I start to work through all the other areas, adding lighter layers and highlights as I progress... This is a slow progress, particularly the edge highlights to the various wings, armour panels and fabric... I’ll post up more progress photos as I go...

A quick update... managed another hour doing the highlights, including the light blue/grey on the wings. It’s getting there slowly. I’m quite pleased with how the banner is turning out, just hope I can finish it off properly. More to follow...

Moving along, I’ve continued to refine the highlights and the next main technique thing is muzzle burn. This model has a hand-flamer (little flamethrower) so we want to apply some heat effects to the muzzle. For this I use blue, violet and sepia shades, starting at the tip with the blue and working back towards the stock, through violet and then sepia. Trying to keep the bands of colour the same width, with a little overlap from one to the next... Once done, we should hopefully have a heat weathered muzzle cover... To give an indication of the number of different shades of colour used on this, here is my pallet for it. I think it’s 37 colours, then there are another 7 shades used direct from the bottle. So we are nearing the end of the whole paint job, so here is a preview: Your thoughts and comments are most welcome. Next will be the basing.

As the snow has decided to make an appearance, 1 whole inch of the stuff, the world has ground to a halt, the kids are off school, as it’s closed, so I’m taking an early refuge at the bench! I wasn’t happy with the text on the banner and shoulder pad, so I re l-did it. Now for the base... Citadel do a range of texture paints, which work pretty well. I’m sure there are cheaper alternatives out there, but I have these, so I may as well make use of them... So today we are using “Agrellan Badlands” As you can see it’s quite a thick, grained texture: I tend to use clay sculpting tools to apply it to the base, varying the texture depth to give it a bit of variation. Now to let it dry!

Continuing the basing... The texture has dried: For my minis, I have chosen a slightly different colouring, but this could be left as is. A grey base coat is applied and allowed to dry: Then a quick brown wash: For the next part I use a Dry Brush specific paint, which is thick! Using a stiff bristled dry brush, I work the paint into the bristles on a piece of kitchen towel until I get the desired amount of paint I want, then I lightly dry brush the surface, building up the layers of colour: Now vegetation. I like the MiniNatur range of grasses, as there are varying lengths, colours and clump sizes. For this theme I’ve gone for dark, dried out grasses to give the impression of a dry wasteland: Et voila, the base is done. Now for final touch ups and snagging...

I think the RRP is £5, but I got 3 for £10.50. They are designed for taking the various shaped bases that gaming figures use.
