Aargh !!! Just when I thought that everything was going smoothly, this happened while painting the deck. And I do not understand how this happened because I did everything "by the book" (followed step by step instructions from VMS www.scalemodellingnow.com/tbfinishing-ultimate-decal-solutions-how-to-use-them/2). And I removed the masking tape very carefully. Only explanation is that the adhesion between decal and the hull was poor, but why? Anyhow, is there any way to recover from this or should I just try to get new decal set from Tamiya? And if that succeeds, how should I clear and repaint the damaged area? "Luckily" the other side was better. Good advice appreciated!

Oh, that is certainly not good, and yes try to get new decals as I don't think anything can be saved there. Okay Kari, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Use a fresh piece of masking tape and try to remove the rest of the damaged decals. 2. If that works, then sand the affected area with some micro mesh. Start with 3000, if that works carry on until the VMS decal fixer is removed. If that doesn't work, then go down with mesh to 2500, 2000, 1200 until one works. Also use the mesh wet, this will reduce the scratching.
The good thing is, should this work, it will not damage the paint to much and certainly not go down to the primer.
The other way would be this: 1. Soak the damaged decals with Microscale Micro Set decal solution. If you don't have that then white vinegar thinned down heavily could work. But it does need thinning. 2. After 5 minutes use a tooth pick to gently scrape or pick the decal remains off. 3. Again gently sand the area with micro mesh to remove any bumps.
I hope this helps you out Kari.

Thanks Paul for your advice! Highly appreciated! I have already contacted the retailer and waiting for his answer if I can get new decals. Thumbs up! I also got a tip for the future to use thin paper between the decal and the masking tape in order to avoid this kind of accident. Though it hurts right now, but this is the way one learns.

Kari, this is exactly what we are here for my friend. It's all a learning curve and sometimes painful, but I reckon if you are going to get help, then here is one of the best places for this.

Decals are so fickle and tempermental I never tape over them because you simply don't know what they will do. Another option may be to leave off the hull lettering. altogether. Apparently the hull lettering was taken off many destroyers after Midway for security purposes.

That’s a crying shame, Karih. I’m sure you will get over it, and this awesome build will be underway again.

It's a real shame when that happens with decals, I've had them fall apart or stick so hard on contact that they can't be moved into the correct position. Ian is right, I'd never tape over them so if you need to mask, put your decals on after that. You can blend them into the rest of the paint by a coat of varnish then weather to reduce the contrast.
All that said your paint is superb fella!

While waiting for the new decals (arrived yesterday), I did some fine tuning. The PE set from Eduard did not have the brass strips for the linoleum deck, so instead I decided to paint them. Although I did not manage to paint them accurately (should be around 0,1 mm wide! Hell of a job to mask them ), I still think it looks more realistic than the strips in Infini set. Those strips look too pronounced to my eye and same applies for the deadlights where I drilled them open and used Krystal Klear. I think those PE deadlights look like Marty Feldman (no disrespect to him or his fans!).
Also, I "enjoyed" myself with some detailed PE work. Those Infini instructions for the stern winch look pretty simple, but reality was something else. However, have to admit that it gives more professional look for the model.
