For my Comet build I’m thinking of doing a simple dio. because I’ve never done one before. Any resources (books, websites, videos etc.) that would be recommended as I really don’t know anything about it so have no filter to say whether a resource is good or bad?
Ta in advance and all that.

Nightshift models from Martin Kovac on Youtube, imo the best dioramabuilder ever. You can find a lot of interesting videos on diorama making. Tommy will ditto this.😄

I’d love to make Michel Roux Jr’s soufflé suissesse but I don’t see it turning out quite as good!

VMS mud is all you need for a basic scene..
Put the mud on a piece of styrofoam then put the tank on to leave some track marks. Remove the tank and let the mud cure.
Then paint with VMS pigments, oils or any of the weathering agents you used on the comet. That way it blends with the tank.
Hey presto! Voila! (I know that is a big violin and I have no idea why they say that).
VMS make some good how to videos which you can see on YouTube. That is how I started making dioramas.

I’ll check out some of the VMS videos but I was thinking of using some hydrocal that I got in the Model Zone closing down sale that I got many years ago. So use that and whack in some of those thick acrylic paints you get from the pound shop and then some dust rubble I got from our local park, also many years ago. Mix it all up and use that as a mud base that I can then weather. I’m thinking of going for a rural lane so for some grass can I just use flock with some thinned PVA or do I really need one of those grass applicators.
So yes I am a cheapskate but I’m trying to avoid shelling out money and then at the end thinking I didn’t enjoy that!

Never used a grass applicator.

Sounds good to me for my first try! So I’m thinking of a dirt track, some patchy grassy to the sides and then maybe something like an open wooden fence just to add another feature. I have a plan!

Jase if want to add a stone wall, then get some foam board. You can peel the paper covering off and scribe the stones into it, For damage, just cut out the areas you don't want. It's very cheap, if you know somebody in the building trade you could probably get some cut-offs for free. I think bakeries use it also for base plates for cakes.

Thanks Paul, do have some foam board that I bought many years ago from Hobbycraft. The problem is that I think it was for water colour painting so they made sure the paper stays attached. I’m going to give a good soak in water and see if that helps getting the paper off!

Well it kinda helps getting the outer layer off but the one underneath, nah that want’s to stay like me in a pub after two pints. I’m off to the model shop on Tuesday, also going to another place to replace my damaged AB needle, so I’ll see what they have there but a wooden fence sound appealing from balsa wood and some picture wire.

Yoh could also check on some AK product video's, they are like the VMS stuff, easy to use and if you really want it simple, you can leave them as they are.
