I picked up two of these kits in my last order. I have no idea what anime or comics they go with. A guy over at Model Geek built one and I liked the look. It's 1/144 scale and actually measures out to about 12.5cms. They really are too big for use with the 1/35 scale VAL stuff...I could...but probably won't. The 1/24 scale stuff is more likely what I'll use them with. They still tower over them but it sort of fits with the idea I'm brewing. 1/16th scale figures would work better but the options are a bit more limited. Maybe if I stick with this I might try some at some point.
The kits have a lot of parts but tend to build up nicely. They well engineered and snap-together, though liquid cement was used in some parts. They are articulated and thus can be posed. They'd probably be a good kit for a beginner. The instructions, in Japaneses, are easy to follow. If you mess up, just pull the assembly apart and redo it. I built both of these in one night. It was fun and I'll probably pick up a few more of these to get a squad of them.
This kit has a few optional pieces. I used a different head...smooth as opposed to the one with the protruding thing from its forehead. I left off the spiked shoulder guard and the L-shaped one. These kits come with a variety of weapons...sort of cartoonish and let's just say someone is compensating for something.
I plan on making some modifications...once I get things caught up. The spiked shoulder guard will be de-spiked. The other shoulder may be rounded off....I really don't care for the L-shaped doohickey. And of course they will be painted.
I think they have a Fallout-Power Armor look to them. The role that I am thinking is to have them as Law Enforcers. Big, heavily armed and armored. They observe a near religious adherence to the Law. They are cyborgs and operate under the direction of another cyborg race, the I-haven't-come-up-with-a-name-yet-ians. The rest of the cast will be filled out with some of the 1/24 scale MasterBox figures I've been messing with. Of course all of this is subject to change at the drop of the proverbial hat.

I'll finish them up at some point.

I'm not a big anime or gundam fan so alot of the backstory is not known to me. For that matter...and I probably speak heresay...but I don't care much for Star Trek and even most of the Star Wars movies. The Zaku kits are a fun build and look very modification-friendly. They are cheap too...$12-15. I've got my eye on a Ogre GN-X that could serve as their commander. My favorite is still the Brutish Dog...I've like to pick up a couple more of those. Squadron is now carrying more Bandai so maybe they'll start carrying them...otherwise it's Amazon and wait 6-8 weeks to arrive from Japan. Anyway, I think the paint scheme will reflect their role. If they are grunts...military police...they'll be more earth-tone oriented. If I go with the secular Law enforcers they'll be fancier. I'm still looking around at some of the 1/16 scale figures. And I'm converting some 1/24s I have. I'm kind of enjoying that. There's this story-line connecting them all...which is fun too.
Here's a little size comparison photograph. I'm sort of trying to mix them all together. Note the 1/24 female figure is smaller that the 1/24 male figure...and yes she's got a tail, though it fell off while taking the picture.

Cool stuff, Alex. Been thinking about these myself. You may have just tipped the scale.

Looking good there Alex. I'm quite fond of the Gundam universe, and the Bandai kits are amongst the best plastic kits out there. Looking forward to see this continue. If you are going to weather it using mineral spirits there's a word of caution though: the Bandai plastic is quite fragile, especially at the joints you need to be careful not to use thinners or as less as possible since it can ruin the great kit.
Cheers
