That is a super set, just enough to look busy but not over stowed.

Exactly! Nice add-on! I'm really liking this kit...got a Breacher in the pipeline, was orignally goin' to do it 1/35 but now..........? Ya getting tempted with a 1/48 as well HUH!! ........i know i am Whats the ones to avoid Prof.........any info Well. I will do my best to tell you what I have found from my years of building TOTS. Firstly, WW2 or Modern. If you want Modern, you're pretty limited at the moment. Tamiya M1A2 as seen here Japanese Type 10 MBT Humvee Humvee based cargo truck. Airfix Jackal Coyote Warrior All are good kits, the Type 10 is a little cracker if a little off main stream, the Humvees build up fairly small. The Airfix kits are great with no fit issues, you even get an interior in the warrior but the slat armour is a little on the thick side. When it comes to WW2, the choice is far greater. Tamiya rule the roost here and to be fair, there are very few dodgy ones. Tamiya have always felt the need to add weight to their 1/48s and on their early releases that meant a die cast hull which you attached details to, the hulls have no detail whatsoever and you are reliant on adding the kit bits to it but that didn't always sort the lack of detail issue. Some of the metal hull kits get away with it such as the Pershing, the Tigers maybe not so and the Sherman's and M10 family suffer from some odd holes behind the drive case where the styrene doesn't meet the metal bit. All Tamiya kits build really well and have no fit issues except perhaps the Cromwell based vehicles where something went wrong with the upper hull and it doesn't fit right at the back. Depending on the subject you can typically expect to find 140-175 parts in the box, all tracked subjects have link and length tracks. The fit tolerances are very tight indeed, I found when building the Pershing a layer of primer and paint on both wheels and tracks was sufficient to cause some fit issues! In my opinion, the best bets are the Abrams, Elefant, Sturmtiger, Pershing, Crusader, Panzer IVs and variants and the M10s but that is very much my personal take, none are so bad they are worth avoiding. Any kit numbers beginning 89 are Tamiya / Italeri collaborations and are basically repops, the AB41 is neat and the Lynx from what I have seen builds well too. Bandai Really showing their age now and are best avoided as they are often wildly overpriced and most of the subjects have now been covered by Tamiya. There are a few exceptions, they still offer the only Opel Maultier! Hobby Boss Mixed bag here. While their Sherman's suffer for serious dimensional issues (except the easy eight), the KV1s and 2s are light years ahead of Tamiyas and cheaper too, excellent kits. Even better are their T34s, full interiors including suspension and engine, mini masterpieces that are clearly scaled down Trumpeter kits. Hobby Boss kits are somewhat cheaper than Tamiya but if you're after the KVs or T34s, don't let that put you off. Skybow If you want to build a Tiger 1, early or late then there's no contest, these are cracking kits with detail way above Tamiyas. Don't fret if you can't find them, they are now sold under AFV Clubs livery.

Wow!! That's a fantastic summary there Prof! I didn't even realise half of those manufacturers did quarter scale! Obviously the M1 and Type 10 are of interest to me but the HB T34's with internals are a VERY tempting prospect....SO many T34 based conversions to choose from. Thanks for posting

Most of the Tamiya kits are supported well in the aftermarket by Hauler for Photoetch and Black Dog for Stowage, drop by Quarter Kits website for even more goodies, mostly in resin.

Thanks for posting Glad to be of some assistance. Abrams and Type10 build faultlessly are are just about big enough for some extra detailing if required. When it comes to bangs for bucks, the Hobby Boss T34s have it, there is three, maybe four variants and you probably get close on 250 parts. You can pick them up for sub £20 and that includes postage.

Definitely food for thought....less white stuff, less paint, more shelf space and comparable detail to the bigger stuff....what's not to like?
The only thing that I could hope for is a Leo 1 in 1/48....
I can feel a shopping spree coming on......

Happy to help chaps.
Yep Jeff, that's one of them, I built one years back just for the hell of it, didn't paint it though.
Very few vices with it, just a lot of super detail, enjoy!
One more thing re Skybow, they also do a Sturmtiger, all three of their offerings have moulded on Zimmerit but for some, they are let down by rubber band tracks. AFV Club do a set of Indy track links for them but in this scale typically cost as much as the kit itself.

As a starter, depends what floats your boat really. For wheeled things, Tamiyas Sd.Kfz 232 (32574) is nice or their Krupp Protz hauling a Flak (32580). For Allied, the 6x6 truck (32548) or their M20 (32556). For tracked things, any Pz.kpfw III is a good try, kits 32543, 32540, 32524 or 32527. For Allied, Pershing (32537), Crusader (32541 or 32555) or the newly released Achilles (32582). For a low cost foray into TOTS, try one of Hobby Bosses KVs, they even do captured ones under German operation.

Couple of previous efforts to bore you with again. Tamiya Pershing. Tamiyas Humvee Cargo Truck thing. Tamiya Crusader. Airfix Supacat Coyote. Got loads more but can't find pics at the moment so you're saved from that ordeal.
