Thanks for stopping in, everybody. I began work on the suspension for the HEMTT and no real problems so far. However, Italeri got the positioning wrong for a few a parts on the chassis so I had to drill and move a couple of pieces but nothing major. Still working on some punch marks and a few seams but making some headway. Regards, Ian

I am getting ready to jump back on this project and will have some progress photos to post soon. However, I was looking ahead to the weathering and paintwork and have a question for you guys. Obviously the vehicle will be in very poor condition since it is a post-apocalyptic theme but would rust be present on a HEMTT body/chassis? Not sure what Oshkosh uses to make these trucks and I wanted to at least keep the weathering element realistic when the time comes. Just food for thought and any input will be appreciated!!!
Regards,
Ian

Thank you, Jabbly! I was looking for weathered HEMTT shots or junkyard shots and did not find much so that is a huge help.

Ian

So I started back on the Post Apocalypse HEMTT gun truck and finished off the chassis work. Lots of part number errors from Italeri in the instructions so I had to figure out the various suspension bits on my own. As matter of fact, alot of the numbers were not even close. There were horrible punch marks underneath the fenders so I found the simplest remedy was just to cover the undersides with pieces of 3M tape, cut to form, which were then sealed on the edges with ultra-thin CA glue. I began work on the truck bed and removed the raised punch marks there by sanding them off. My tentative plan right now is to have the chassis and cab done in NATO Green (or full tri-color) and the truck bed in Sand as if parts had been swapped out in the aftermath. The armor side plates (not added yet) in the truck bed will be highly rusted metal and I think I will do some sections with heavy tagging and graffiti as if they had been scavenged from a building or scrapyard. I think the environment will be a Zombie/Marauder post apocalypse type thing so I am adding a telescoping boom which will have optics attached to the top to look over hills and down streets for herds/marauders and so forth. I plan to depict it as something scavenged off a news truck from the aftermath so I will run coiled cable up the outside of the boom. I made the boom itself out of pieces of copper, although the top piece was sheet stock because I needed a thin piece of tubing. This will be attached to the truck bed and will fold parallel to the bed itself. Still debating over whether or not I will build a small enclosure in the truck bed or keep it open and do a "conestoga" type covering and frame over part of it. Anyway, stay tuned.! Regards, Ian

Thanks!!! Yeah, the punch mark problem on the fenders was really a head-scratcher because with the fenders angled down on the front and back it was hard to get in there with a stick or a pad to fill and sand them. Thanks for checking in!
Best wishes,
Ian

Looking forward to this as I do like the heavily weather style. Yes, this should be fun! I have all the Vallejo Weathering sets ready to go especially for the rusted armor parts. Best wishes, Ian

Excellent idea and start, like the tape idea too, never thought of that! Yeah, it works really well, Sniper. A lot easier than dealing with the stupid punch marks. Best wishes, Ian

Looking good.
Here's an idea for the bed covering. Frame it and have a storage rack on top. That'll give you additional storage space as well as a solid-ish roof. You could use this to mount extra floodlights for night...because that's when the bugaboos seem to come out.
We use to have post-apoc group builds over on another site. We called them End of Days Campaigns. They were always fun and part of that fun was working these designs out. Keep up the good work. I'll be interested to see where this one goes.
