Every once and awhile it is fun to take a prior build, strip it and then do a refinish. It is fun because you can apply new techniques you learned since you built it, you can fix things you did not like about it and you can go right to the paint/weather/decal phase without that pesky fill/sand/curse construction part. This is the Trumpeter 1/32 scale F-105D which came out in 2004 or so. It was really not a bad kit although it needed metal gear struts as there was no way the soft Trumpeter plastic was going to hold the aircraft up. I had used Albatro Decals to depict Major Jack Spiller's -105, "I Dream of Jeanie" from the 355th TFW out of Takhli during the Vietnam War. However, the paint and panel line work I was never happy with so off to the shop for a refurb. I removed most of the sub-assemblies and then stripped the decals. Once that was done, I primed the model with Tamiya Primer and got everything smooth again. I then started back on the four tone Southeast Asia camo and started with the undersides first. I used Mission Models FS36622 Camo Grey and the Mission Models Paint laid down perfectly. Next will be the FS30219 Tan on the upper surfaces and I will use Mission Models for that as well. I have my decal choice picked out for the reincarnation and I am fairly convinced this nose are would get me kicked out of most model shows. Stay tuned..................

Finally had a moment to post an update on the F-105 refurb. After the I got the plane primered, I reapplied the SEA camo using Mission Models FS30219 Tan, Mission Models FS36622 Grey, Vallejo FS34079 Green and Aeromaster FS34102 Med. Green. The camo was shot freehand with a Paasche using a #1 Tip. I was much happier with the new camo application this go-around. I did some slight post shading on each camo color as well using a lightened shade. I then drew in the panel lines with an .005 Micron ink pen, although I still have to draw in the lines on the undersides. Other than some oil washes, that will be the extent of the weathering as the F-105s in photos looked to be in pretty good shape and alot of them didn't last long enough in combat to get alot of wear and tear. That was the problem with the paint job when I built it years ago as I went too heavy on the weathering. I also did not have the main gear set right when I built the plane fifteen years ago, so I rebroke the mains at the joint and reset them after I repainted the wheels and struts. I also repainted the wheel bays and gave them a heavy wash with Pledge Floor Wax diluted with a few drops of Acryl Black. Next I will be repainting the drop tanks and I am going with natural metal tanks as the -105 I plan to depict was an early camo one with borrowed tanks from a silver F-105. Still plan to go with the extra naughty nose art on this one and she is standing by in the decal notebook.

Thanks, Marco! Well, you boys asked for it and here you go. Decals are on for "PUSSY GALORE II" from 354th TFS/355th TFW, Takhli AFB, 1966. I used Zotz decals and they laid down perfectly. This was an F-105D flown by then Captain Vic Vizcarra. It was the second F-105 to bear the "PUSSY GALORE" nose art as the first one was originally a natural metal finish -105 that ended up getting shot down over Hanoi. Vizcarra had the noseart painted on a second F-105 with Ms. Galore strategically positioned with her @#%$^*& over the refueling receptacle. Needless to say the KC-135 crews had some interesting radio chatter when trying to get the boom in her &^%$#@#%^. Ms. Galore lasted about three weeks until Col. Robert Scott, 355th Wing Commander, saw it and had an absolute conniption over it causing her removal. "PUSSY GALORE II" actually survived numerous missions over Hanoi, only to be totaled on the ramp in Taiwan after she got hit by a fuel truck. I got the drop tanks painted with Vallejo Silver as she carried silver tanks from a NMF -105. The bombs were left as is from the original build so I am about ready to put Ms. Galore back together.
