I have been working on the sub-assemblies for the Whiskey and as you can see lots of different colors and assemblies involved. Whiskeys have alot of different arrows in their quiver so there's a real variety in the weapons they carry. The AGM-114 Hellfires and rack came from the Academy MH-60L kit and are a great improvement over the ones in the Whiskey kit. I painted the missiles yellow then masked off the live ordnance bands and painted the missiles AK NATO Black. Photos indicated most of the racks appeared to be US Army Helo drab so I used a left-over bottle of the enamel Model Master color for that. The rocket pods were painted Vallejo FS34079 Dark Green with Tamiya Metallic Grey end caps. The TOW launchers were painted US Army Helo Drab, once again, and the drop-in TOW tubes were painted with Mission Models Olive Drab.
I worked on the chaff buckets next and photos showed blue and white chaff/flare inserts but I painted some of the tubes black to indicate where some of the packs had been discharged. I worked on the stub wings next and pics indicated most Whiskeys had faded black walkways on top so I used AK NATO Black for those. The color call-outs in the directions for the main and tail rotors were out of date. Whiskeys have all black tail and main rotor assemblies, including the rotor shaft, and no yellow for the tips so I used AK NATO Black for these also. Verlinden does provide a nice set of resin helmets in the update set but the helmets were the older style head gear. USMC helo pilots use the HGU-84 helmet, like the fast-mover crews, so I found two of those in the spares box from the Academy F/A-18C set. I will remove the oxygen mask and drill out the heads (ouch..... ) and then add those to the cockpit area.
