The A-6E Intruder (TRAM) is finally done. I scratch built exhaust plugs from sheet stock and installed those and then got the rest of the subassemblies on. I gave the Intruder a flat coat of Vallejo Matte Varnish to finish her off. I then painted all the nav lights/beacon lights with Tamiya Clear Blue and Clear Red. The plane depicted is an A-6E Intruder (TRAM) from the "Boomers" of VA-165 in 1989-90. The "Boomers" tried a couple of camo patterns on their Intruders; this scheme and another variant with several greens. However, its was found to work too well and it was found they were hard to see by other aircraft during the Red Flag Exercises at Nellis. This A-6E reverted back to the grey low-viz scheme and was eventually traded to the "Silver Foxes" of VA-155. This aircraft deployed with the air wing on USS Ranger for Desert Storm but was shot down on 01.17.91 while on a mine-laying mission near Um-Qasr. Lt. William Costen and Lt. Charlie Turner ejected from the aircraft but neither survived, their bodies being recovered on 03.12.91.
