Well my wife requested an A-6E Intruder for her birthday so time to get this one cranked up. I will be using the Monogram A-6 kit and although it is an older kit it builds up into a great looking A-6 replica. She left the marking option up to me so I will be going with a rare camo version used by the "Boomers" of VA-165 in '89-'90 during a Red Flag exercise at Nellis AFB. I will be using the Fightertown Decal sheet for that variant and they are really nice decals. This scheme also features a very cool looking "false canopy" painted on the underside of the plane. The colors are FS30219 SEA Tan and FS30279 Desert Sand (very close to the RAF sand color used on the Tonkas, Jags and Buccs before they turned pink from the sun in '91). Regards, Ian

Now that's going to look great in that scheme.

I just love the Intruder and Prowler. Such ‘tanks’ of aircraft. I made the Kinetic EA-6B Prowler several years ago in 1:48. 😀

Thanks for stopping in, gents. Boots, in answer to your question about the "False canopy", back in the 80's and 90's USN, USMC and USAF experimented with painting a look alike canopy on the bottom of the aircraft to confuse enemy pilots about how the aircraft was oriented when it was flying. As you can see on the decal sheet, it's basically just a painted-on canopy on the underside of the aircraft. Apparently it works pretty well and I believe there were one or two USMC Hornet squadrons that continued utilizing those well into the 2000's. Some USAF A-10s out of Spangdahlem also had the false canopy painted on as well. Anyway, I got the A-6 started and began work on on the instrument panel. I also installed the speed brakes and the intakes on the fuselage halves. This particular A-6E still had the perforated speed brakes on the fuselage, rather than the solid plates, so I installed those. Revell actually provides both styles in the kit. The brakes, themselves, were not actually used as the Intruders had the wingtip brakes which were alot more stable than the ones on the fuselage. Anyway, stay tuned! Regards, Ian

Great camo and decal choice Ian but that old plastic is going to test you by the looks of it?

Thanks, guys! Steve, the plastic isn't too bad but it is a later release of the A-6 so it does use that softer, grey plastic which Revell utilized on their later reissues.

Ian

I got the cockpit installed in the A-6 and then joined the fuselage halves. Pretty solid build, like the real A-6, and everything fit well. Also plenty of room in the nose for large bird egg sinkers to keep the plane as a nose sitter. I will work on the seams next but they are fairly minor and then I will install the wings. Regards, Ian
