I'm thinking about trying some. What would you guys recommend for basic colors ?

I have used them in the past but apart from specific rust tones etc I would recommend buying a selection of quality oil paints instead. Go for raw umber, burnt sienna lamp black and a good white as a start. Oils are quite easy to mix to get any tone you want. I have also used MIG oils in the past but found that they dry out in the tubes over time. The better the quality oil paint you buy the finer the colour pigments used will be.

Pete, I have some Winsor and Newton oils. I guess what I'm asking is are the Abteilung's any better? As you know most of my builds are Braille and I'm finding it hard to get the results I want, basically because the pigments don't seem fine enough.

Ah I see, I don't think they are any different from any other quality oils but I see what you mean regarding braille scale stuff. For my small scale and 1/48th models I now usually use acrylic washes. They take some time to build up but the effect is more in scale. Vallejo, true earth and others make specific acrylic washes and I've had good results with them all.

Boots would be nice if you'd tell us about the mixing of those . Like what you use, to roughly how much paint - water, window cleaner, alcohol, wee or whatever .

I just simply put a blob of the required colour on a pallet and then just put a few drops of plain tap water next to it and blend the two to the strength i require......i start off light and then draw the colour in a bit more if i want to go slightly darker.....

How do you not get tidemarks?

I still gloss before applying ...the same as you would using the pre-made oil based ones, i havn`t had any probs with tide marks fella........maybe i been lucky , i use Pz Aces dark rust a lot and i just draw the paint into the little pool of water and mix with a small brush until i create the coloured wash, i then just run it into the recess for pin washing etc.......i have used it as a heavier wash as well with no probs.........

I have used the 502's a few times in the past and found them to be generally ok. Though as Pete identified, not signifcantly better than any other oils ( usually W&N) I've used. Planning to bring them out again on the Tiran wreck, so I'll be able to remind myself...

Thanks for the info, Paul. The 502's are costly over here and as you guys say they are not that much better than W&N, I'm going to hold off.

Jeff, i too have several Abteilung 502 Oils and just as many W&N Winton and Artist oils. Just go W&N for sure. Abteilung 502 Oils are ok, but nothing special other than coming in Military and Weathing colors.

Hey, G. Thanks for the info my Southern Bro. I can get W&N stuff for about half the cost of the 502's. Guess I'll stick with them.

I’ve just bought some of those water soluble oils, they seem very fine with great colour. Guess I’ll find out tonight when I try them for the first time
