Wouts, I love the weathering work you have done so far. Really brilliant work. I also just found out Eduard has a clipped wing A6M3 in the works for October.

Guy, thanks for the help Steve, yeah those bloody decals I decided not to use Sol because the Mr. Mark Softer has a reputation to be stronger than Sol, but it seems not strong enough , and Ian, thanks chaps Ian: yeah I saw that A6M3 in the email from Eduard this week. Very cool indeed. Darn, and I want the A6M2 as well, my wallet, ouch

I agree with AG: satin is better. These planes; despite popular opinion were not flat coated as that created drag in flight. A smoother plane will use less fuel during flight.
As for dirty, in a frenetic combat environment where planes are being scrambled daily (and/or nightly) then the time spent cleaning them would disappear, making these planes at least as dirty as you show. Their ground crews would have been concentrating on maintenance and repair to keep them flying, not cleaning to make them look good. A plane that looks great but cannot fly is of no use.

That does make a lot of sense, but we are talking about the Japanese here . Thanks for the help and explanation though, always good to read ^^ Hopefully today the satin coat, I always enjoy chipping so much!

Looking forward to seeing the chipping on this one Wouter. As for the grime, I think you're just about right.

Thanks Steve, glad you like it. So, I gave the plane a coat of satin today. At first my reaction was: "oh my what have I done???", but when stepping back and looking at it, it looks alright. You lose some of the subtle weathering effects, but it's not too bad. And now I glued the rear and front canopy parts in place with some Micro Kristal Klear. The middle section I will glue in place at the end of the build. starts to like like a Zero alright ^^

Many, many thanks chaps, really puts a smile on my face Since we are enjoying ourselves: let's do some chipping! The link to Brittmodeller which Ian provided me with a couple of pages back, provided me with some useful info. Nick Millman - who is a specialist when it comes to zeros and colours had something interesting to mention: apparantly most A6M's were first coated in a red oxide primer before the well known green and caramel underside colours were applied. Although we often see heavily chipped zeros with loads of aluminium shining through, we pretty much never (at least I never saw a model so far) see a model with remnants of that red oxide primer. So, since I adore 3D chipping, let's add some red oxide primer first . A happy accident: the colour I chose seems to be very complementary to the IJN green. Seems like a perfect marriage . I chose Vallejo 70985 Hull Red I didn't want to go all the way with a lot of chipping, and I think I (fairly) managed to do that. Or I'd like to think that anyway LOL Next step: painting some insides of the red oxide primer with aluminium showing through. I used Ammo Mig's Flat Aluminium. It's a metallic paint and I must say I find it hard to control in comparison with regular paints. Also, on the underside of the plane the aluminium almost 'blends in' with the basecolour. Only when the light falls directly on it you shee the shiny aluminium, I quite like that effect. With that out of the way, next step will be airbrushing some exhaust stains and maybe some dust streaks here and there. After that I still need to continue weather the landing gear, external fuel tank and paint some smaller bits and bobs. But the end is nearing
