Okay chaps, it is time to get this twin 120mm brute on the bench . Versuchsträger is translated into test-bed, and that is what this vehicle was. It tested the new 120mm L44 Rheinmetall smooth bore gun. It was also to test the feasibility of a new "Jagdpanzer". The idea behind this came from the fact that NATO was wildly outnumbered, I can't remember the ratio but I think it was something 12-1. In other words 12 soviet tanks to 1 NATO. The project was originally a British German venture, the Brits however pulled out as they didn't see the need for new turretless vehicle. The dual project was known as the Kampfpanzer 3, and was intended to replace the the Leopard 1 and be used alongside the Chieftain. But as things are, it did not come about. At the same time the Leopard II was already being built and tested, and proved itself as a worthy follower to the Leo 1. And so the KPz 3 project was dropped. So, the box is open, plastic has cut and glued and yes I like the way this going . The suspension is in place, and I have started work on the Casematt

Joe, cheers mushty . It certainly is a monster . Ian, I sure hope so sir, thanks also . The colour scheme on this one is going to be good old Gelb-oliv . Todays update; gun barrels and the magazines put together and a load of little bits on top of the casematt

Ian, watcha ole chap . That ratio was for tank on tank Ian, what it is now I don't know. And you have to remember that was NATO against Russia, so we had UK, French, Belgian, Dutch, US, Canadian, Italian, German, Norwegian and Greek vehicles all taken into account

As this has two shooters does it count as double?

As this has two shooters does it count as double? If it had made it series production and if, there were enough produced it might have upped the odds. But the draw back was, it only had two 6 round magazines. I have now idea how many rounds were carried on-board to reload.

Certainly does, considering this from the end of the 70's early 80's.

A cool oddball, I just like it Paul. That massive casemate at the front of the hull with the heavy, long barrels must have been a pita for the driver? I can imagine the barrels kissed the ground when the thing had to stop on the spot.

Guy, Boots, cheers muckers . Guy, this StuG is a huge vehicle and defo rear heavy, that would have prevented any mining operations with the barrels

That thing needs flechette rounds for some double-barrel street fighting in Duisburg.

Nice looking kit and my understanding is that it came from the idea of armour couldn’t keep up with the development of ATGM’S so the idea came to be just not to be hit in the first place. There’s a nice section in the book Tanks: 100 Years of Evolution which I can recommend as it’s both informative and not a dry read.
