Thanks guys, I did more of the same at the other side. The tail is for tomorrow. Your opinion : should I airbrush a uniform and semi transparent kinda misty coat over the entire plane, to bring the uniform alu colour back but with softer panel shades ? What do you think flybrothameisters?

Beautiful, Guy! The wings on the D-model were actually covered with slick, silver lacquer to assist with the laminar airflow and to keep them speedy. I think a soft filter coat on the wings would be good and leave the fuselage as is.

Thanks for sharing your view on the alu question and the priceless info on the wings brotha. I'll give it a misty silvery shot.

Ian, this is the photo I used as a guide to airbrush the wings. Only for reference purposes. Beautiful panel work AG, it really adds interest Now you've entered the world of wings you have to make up your mind on how you want to build. Ian is 100% right, the wartime Mustang had the upper wing panel lines and rivets filled with putty then painted with silver lacquer. This improved the airflow so much it offset the added weight. Your reference pic is a warbird restoration , hence the panels.Nothing wrong with modelling one of those There's thousands of pages of 'debate' on the web about that with the armchair experts forcing thier views on everyone. Mustang wings. How much of a Spitfire cockpit was green... It goes on and on... You don't seem to find that so much with AFVs

I'm enjoying this world of wings a whole lot and I'm incredibly impressed by the knowledge of people like you, Ian, Paul...who are so much active in plane modelling. I'm in the best company possible here on MHO. No worries about the guys you call armchair experts, I don't give a penny for their pushing comments, au contraire I wouldn't hesitate to paint my next plane in the craziest colours to ennoy them.😁💥🔥 Now I know more on the P-51 wartime improvements thanks to you guys. And maybe I'll alter one in the future.

On an unrelated note, I was reading on "another forum" about the lacquer/putty issue because I was trying to find out how much extra speed was obtained. Mother of God---it turned into eight pages of name-calling, personal attacks and a final nuking of the thread by admin. Oh man----the interwebs. LOL!!!!!!

Guy, another funny P-51 build story; back in the early 2000s I built Bud Anderson's "Old Crow" from the 357th. These were green over grey. I posed the question in one forum, "Soooooo, what shade of green were these, anyway?" The thread looked like Sarajevo by the time they were done. ( Fairly confident the 357th greenies were painted with stolen RAF Dark Green or Dark Green automotive paint but I asked anyway just to see the mushroom cloud).
