Looking good karih. Did you leave the decal overnight to settle?
For decals I always use VMS a set and fix then VMS softener.

Yes, I left it overnight and then added some more softener, but it did not improve much. Surprising how different these decals are from different manufacturers...

Kari that is annoying with that decal issue, but you have done a darned good job there . If I have decals which I am not too sure about, I will always give them a coating with " Microscale Liquid Decal Film". Ian told me about this stuff and it is amazing. You brush it onto the decal while still on the carrier paper, let it dry and then as normal. When the coating is dry, it will act like a thin protection coat and keep the decals in one piece.

After this treatment, do you proceed normally with Micro Set + Sol (or whatever one is using)?

Yes Kari, with the following steps it is no different to a normal, new decal

Do you ever have a feeling that no matter you do, everything goes to bonkers ?! It has been a very frustrating experience with this GT40, especially since the Meng kit is a nice one (apart from the decals). Just when I thought I got a grip with those special paints and a started to add the final varnish, another disaster stroke! No matter what I did (different pressures, needle sizes and I even gave the varnish a ultrasonic mix), I could not get the VMS varnish to spray evenly and I got a terrible orange surface. Well, I thought that I have this nice polishing stuff from Ultimate and that will fix it. But VMS is very soft, so I managed to polish through the varnish ! So decided to give up and try to cover it with heavy weathering...
And then the next disaster happened, when I glued the body halves together. There were some fit issues, so I had to use the masking tape to secure a nice seam. But when I removed the tape, part of the the decal on the lower side panel came off. So, at the moment I am not too happy...
Regarding the weathering, I decided to add an imitation of the clean area on the windscreen cleaned by wipers (I understood that there was some foul weather during the race in 1966). We will see how that goes...
Next time I will use stuff that I know to behave well (so mostly Tamiya).

Is this the fit issue you was talking about karih.......
A quote from my build...
At the mo i`ve hit a nasty snag fit wise!!
I researched the body fit after i had a problem with getting it to seat squarly with the lower half, the front part fits perfectly but the rear end stops about a mm from the lower body. Apparently this is a common fault as a load of builders have had exactly the same issue....at least i know it`s not me!! Nobody has mentioned anything about correcting it and all the finished models (some stunning) are showing this gap. The only restriction i can see is the inner bulkhead...but...how to lower it without causing major damage, ideally i need to take 1mm off the height but it is a major integral part of the rear end.I can`t saw it or even really file it and 1mm of placcy is a lot to remove on a delicate part, i am toying with using a low speed Dremmel and gently skim the top.........thats my best solution so far........either that or finish it half-heartedly and keep the gap!!

I did use a dremmel in the end and the back end dropped in nicely
As for that PITA rear decal over the scoop................it took me 24hrs to get it right with constant use of SOL...........i got it about 99% perfect in the end and there was a miniscule line which i used the tiniest bit of white paint on, once glossed you`d never know

I had to file the doors to get the upper body to fit the lower one properly. I guess you talking about the gap in the included photo. It is strange as the center part of the roof fits nicely, but I will need to check what is the problem.
As for the decals: I did the same with the scoop decal, very light sanding and some white paint. Not perfect but OK. The side decals are another thing. I used a combination of Mr Color decals and the kit ones. The side decals are from Mr Color, but they are quite a bit different than the Meng ones. I have the kit decals available, but that means I have to remove all the side decals from BOTH sides because the destroyed part cannot be replaced with the decal from Meng. I am not sure if I dare to do that...
Thanks anyway!!

That's fantastic work with those decals. What a challenge but you executed the application perfectly.

So here we go: managed to remove the decal from the left side with lots of Sol & some scrabing. Of course the rest of the decal was well glued so I could not avoid some scratches on the paint. Will try some light wet sanding and hopefully I can avoid to respray the body colour (probably not ). We will see if a disaster turns into another disaster or what. I am pretty close to a situation where I throw the kit into a trash bin...

Kari this one is really giving a rough time, but it shows that you have a strong will. I would have dropped kicked the damned thing into the bin, long ago.

Weather allowing, I sprayed the primer onto the door panels to be followed by the ZP colour & varnish and then new decals. We will see if I manage to recover this disaster... !
