Hi chaps!
Being always late with the GB projects, I decided to take a proper head start while waiting for the warmer weather (if the administration does not have any objections ?).
So my choice for the GB "Owt that floats" is the mighty "Musashi". I bought this Tamiya kit (old tool) long ago after I decided to restart this great hobby. Since then I have managed to get the wooden deck from Pontos, lots of "nice" (=tiny ) PE stuff from Eduard + Infini + Epic Hobby + FStar plus brass gun barrels from Aber. So there will be plenty of challengies included and we will see if I manage to complete this before the deadline ! Anyhow, there is another carrot involved since the next Lahti Model Show will be in the beginning of September, so there is a tiny change thet I might be ready long before the deadline (some wishful thinking !).
To get an idea of the enormous size of this battleship, I include here a rare photo of this giant:
ONLY FOR REFERENCE PURPOSES
And here we go:

I'll agree with Boots on that . This will be a massive project, so you'll need the extra time.

Minus 25 here in arctic Finland, so perfect time to stay inside and do some modelling.
Tamiya's "Musashi" is dated back to 1979, so it is a very inaccurate kit with lots of errors. But I knew from the beginning that to build a model like this will take at least 2 shots, so decided to start with this inexpensive version (and actually only one of "Musashi"). When I get my skills in proper level, I will tackle the Yamato (Tamiya's new tool with close to triple the price).
So started to correct some the errors in the hull area: - the hull is one piece, but the center seam is pretty uneven => some filler and sanding
- plastic degaussing cable is to be replaced with a PE one => scraping & sanding
- hawsepipes (openings for the bow anchors) are in the wrong position => cover with polystyrene piece and some filler plus opening new ones in correct position
- propeller shaft glands have wrong shape => grind away with Dremel and build new one from the plastic pipes & filler
- replace ugly side scuttels with PE stuff (including hundreds of small holes to be drilled !), ordered Flyhawk Blind Covers from Ebay

This is going to be an epic project! I didn't realize this kit was from 1979. Great attention to detail, thus far.

Yeah Bert, I think I have opened a can of worms ! Ian, there has been some additions and new parts since 1979, but the original tooling is from that year. Actually strange Paul, that I really feel at home with these ship models. Maybe because I am a Naval Architect by education, so the interest has always been there. But despite the enormous challengies, they are also very rewarding and you do not have to worry about the perfect shiny paint work !

Nice! Good to see Yamato's sister ship being built. A shame uncle Tammi never released a new tool version of Musashi but this kit is in capable hands. Looking forward to see it unfold (hope it won't be a long term project like my Yammi LOL) Just to give you some more eyecandy. There's a rare photo of a Yamato class battleship firing it's massive main guns. It's actually Musashi during trials. In some films there are CGI versions of Yamato and Musashi firing their main guns, but the the fire and smoke leaving the barrels are always underwhelming in those. If you see how far the blast reached it's quite understandable that the decks needed to be clear of sailors before firing

I have a copy of the Skulski book AOTS Battleships Yamato and Musashi and at least for an engineer like me, it is such an exciting reading ! I guess you have also followed the discussions ongoing on the web site "The Ship Model Forum" and it is amazing how much buzz the Yamato class has created. I am currently going through the 162 pages ( ) of the topic "Calling all IJN Yamato and Musashi fans" to find out any valuable hints regarding the inaccuracies in this Tamiya kit. However, it a bit strange to see those heated opinions regarding certain topics . There has been also some speculation regarding the launch of the new kit for Musashi, but for some unknown reason it has not been realized which is a great shame.
Anyhow, it is good to see you back in action! I am just dying to see your masterpiece Yamato to be finished (no pressure !). There are so many things we can learn from each other in this community.

I'm a tad late but I'm in. A big ship is on the agenda for my retirement builds and you're the fella to learn from Welcome Steve! Always good to have a fellow ship enthusiastic in this group. But the man to follow regarding the ship modelling is really Meister Wouter. I am sure that we all are waiting to see his masterpiece Yamato to be continued...

Yeah, that ship forum has great info about the Yamato class (I did the reading of all of those pages as well ). The Skulski book is a must have I think, although it contains some inaccuracies, but it's 3D models and schemes are a goldmine of information, even for tech noobs like me. A tip regarding that ship forum: look a bit at the on going build threads there. Belgium's finest Marijn van Gils is building a diorama there (HMS Victory vs a French ship of the line) and that's just gobsmacking...modelling next level style! About the pressure....yeah, not very likely mine will be finished within 2 years

I checked that van Gils and OH MY GOD! He cannot be human, that work is out of this world! What a patience & skills that must require...
You take your time with Yamato, that is something one cannot rush. But also remember what Voltaire (?) has said: "Perfect is the enemy of good"... !

This is going to be a LONG LONG project...
The old Tamiya kit has several inaccuracies in the hull alone. For example, many of the portlights are missing (eg. from the lower deck above the waterline) and even more are placed incorrectly. So I had to make an Excel-spreadsheet based on the info in Skulski book and to convert that into the model ! So there will more than 350 portlights to be checked, measured, drilled, filled and covered with PE parts (eyebrows & blind covers)...
