Hi guys, Last year in April I started what supposed to be a 'quick' build. Something different for a change: a 1/350 HobbyBoss U-Boot Typ VIIC. As with all my builds, no such thing as a fast one LOL. The build was finished rather fast but after that she became a shelf queen. ![](https://i.imgur.com/x13Txvx.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/UuOSuwm.jpg) Last saturday I watched the first episode of the new mini series 'Das Boot' and that sparked something in my head and voila, she has paint now. ![](https://i.imgur.com/nhZPJk4.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/cDIbijw.jpg) ![](https://scontent.fbru2-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/29694491_10155931623692771_3634347428330602496_o.jpg?_nc_cat=108&_nc_ht=scontent.fbru2-1.fna&oh=3c126e73b488c3cdcdd0cb1504fc2b9a&oe=5CDA5659) The build is rather straight forward and mostly OOB, only things which I replaced by etch are the AA gun barrels and the periscopes by Aber ones. ![](https://scontent.fbru2-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/53617008_10156700954782771_1804448376754798592_o.jpg?_nc_cat=101&_nc_ht=scontent.fbru2-1.fna&oh=d64127fc9bf18278c6a776020f71b78c&oe=5D219FEF) ![](https://scontent.fbru2-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/53330467_10156700954742771_3417840995977396224_o.jpg?_nc_cat=105&_nc_ht=scontent.fbru2-1.fna&oh=71abf588965b2528cd3087183a6f8625&oe=5D0B7E6D) The paint photos date from yesterday. I must say I'm very pleased with the decals: very small, but they handle well and they fit around edges with ease. Just used two applications of SOL Today I painted the details and added a first pinwash to the light parts, photos will follow soon. Oh and if you were wondering: 'the bloke didn't add rudders and screw'. Indeed, I hope to simulate a seascape so those parts won't be visible. Fingers crossed ^^ Cheers

Hi guys, very pleased you like it, thanks for the great comments ^^ Well, I did a bit more. First things first. I started with a pinwash. I used Ammo by Mig panel line wash Deep Grey for it. ![](https://scontent.fbru2-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/54521945_10156712112417771_4480190273195868160_o.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_ht=scontent.fbru2-1.fna&oh=79c87c61cd5275c794cb888b0576cd85&oe=5D184700) When that had dried a filter was applied. The area where I was going to work on was slightly wetted with odourless thinner. After that I randomly placed oil dots on the wet surface. ![](https://scontent.fbru2-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/54256719_10156712112347771_4187137202821529600_o.jpg?_nc_cat=108&_nc_ht=scontent.fbru2-1.fna&oh=135c53238267af4ec08c22ba8a144319&oe=5D1D665A) Next I dragged the dots down using a flat brush, blending them in. ![](https://scontent.fbru2-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/53668463_10156712112232771_2961047417044074496_o.jpg?_nc_cat=101&_nc_ht=scontent.fbru2-1.fna&oh=a2c729a1935f72e0d76cafe7273bf351&oe=5D1636E8) The same was done with the whole hull and conning tower. On the horizontal surfaces the same was done, but rather than dragging down, the paint was blended in using a stabbing motion. The result is rather subtle, and not too easy to capture on camera. ![](https://scontent.fbru2-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/53628889_10156712112307771_659206887853522944_o.jpg?_nc_cat=103&_nc_ht=scontent.fbru2-1.fna&oh=dd5725d0bc203ec811feae1aba2f3062&oe=5D1DE511) The filter session was repeated, but this time I used Humbrol enamels: Flesh and Radome tan. This was to simulate salt streaks. It's even more subtle, but it's there ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) ![](https://scontent.fbru2-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/53891046_10156712112442771_2303713547248467968_o.jpg?_nc_cat=101&_nc_ht=scontent.fbru2-1.fna&oh=0531972a1ce885f19914fee03959546c&oe=5D109D6D) After that I started with a new technique for me. It's something Marijn Van Gils does. Rather than using a pinwash flow around details and in nooks and crannies to emphasize details, he paints less diluted paint (Humbrol black and Raw umber oil paint mixed) around the details. ![](https://scontent.fbru2-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/53560508_10156712112262771_6684744604811526144_n.jpg?_nc_cat=100&_nc_ht=scontent.fbru2-1.fna&oh=a73309a1cf63fc3539bc0b0599b78b78&oe=5D0E870E) Before the paint dries the shadow is blended using a clean brush slightly moistened with thinner (darn, these photos show how much dust flies around in my basement ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) :/ ) ![](https://scontent.fbru2-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/53219002_10156712112202771_6217836107313184768_o.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_ht=scontent.fbru2-1.fna&oh=068a4703b28ae3fcc860e83a2945e23d&oe=5D256C82) It's a more timeconsuming proces than a pinwash (3+ hours now for just the hull sides of this tiny sub) but I think it will be worth it. More to follow soon hopefully. Cheers

Might be time consuming but it's gonna look awesome fella ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) . Taking notes as I might need this for the Gneisenau shelf queen ![(:))](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/ninja.png) .

Beautiful weathering, indeed. I always liked the effect of dot-blending and you really nailed it in your weathering. Thanks for sharing!

Hi guys, thanks for the great comments. And Paul, get out that Gneisenau will ya ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) When the shading was finished (about 5+ hours) it looked like this: ![](https://scontent.fbru1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/53862943_10156712685172771_444824248108711936_o.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_ht=scontent.fbru1-1.fna&oh=d374a63a71fe451d18821c2d95a3f8d1&oe=5D07B572) ![](https://scontent.fbru1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/53779065_10156712685147771_7421240880855515136_o.jpg?_nc_cat=110&_nc_ht=scontent.fbru1-1.fna&oh=2ef35b10d95a63e5d00ed73939970dc8&oe=5D0D2C86) Highlights were painted and after that it was time for some streaking. For this I used the shading mix and for the rusty streaks Humbrol Leather was added to the shading mix. After that, I glued the conning tower and gun in place, and this is how she stands: ![](https://scontent.fbru1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/55835962_10156750403822771_2170972441889734656_o.jpg?_nc_cat=101&_nc_ht=scontent.fbru1-1.fna&oh=fe3d06af4a0e68088bb47839403cef6f&oe=5D06EC8D) ![](https://scontent.fbru1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/55807373_10156750403852771_5562924444453699584_o.jpg?_nc_cat=108&_nc_ht=scontent.fbru1-1.fna&oh=b9528cf1b8f0cb375c57acaaba2f38c9&oe=5D02F68F) ![](https://scontent.fbru1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/55875398_10156750403877771_5419265746976899072_o.jpg?_nc_cat=111&_nc_ht=scontent.fbru1-1.fna&oh=17d385b06d21310d4dc94c34ab80a504&oe=5D3CAA6C) Next up will be the two most scary things of the whole build ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) : rigging and making the seascape. Never tried both of them. A crew are underway as well. Figures from North Star Models Cheers
