I had some downtime today as the Toon Panther and B-52 cured up with their respective finishes. While doing so, I decided to get back on this as it has sat rather forlornly on my workbench for some time. (Like two years maybe
" src="//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/superangry.png">). This is the Revell-Monogram 1/32 Scale F-4G Wild Weasel Sam Hunter. The kit itself is OK as the shape is generally good and it has recessed panel lines but I ran into several problems and ended up with the modeler's version of writers block. The issues started with the cockpit tub as the kit seats were horrible and there are no sidewall panels at all. I ended up obtaining some True Details F-4 bang-seats at a show and they are really nice so that solved the seat problem. I also started scratchbuilding cockpit sidewall inserts, using the Osprey book F-4 Phantom book for modelers, as a reference. The other problem was that most of the ordnance in the kit was not correct for late 80's/early 90's G-model Phantoms. I had decided to depict an F-4G from the 52nd TFW out of Spangdahlem and of course they did not carry most of the ordnance or ECM pods provided in the Revell kit.
I ended up scratch building a AN/ALQ-131 ECM pod which is the one the 52nd jets carried in the forward well. The pod is almost finished but I still have to add some side plates and other details. I had gotten the bird painted and had planned to use the Speed Hunter SEAD F-4 sheet. It is a beautiful sheet but no full schematic for the camo scheme was provided. I did eventually find plans for the camo and it was painted in Euro I camo using Model Master paints (probably my fave scheme from the 80's, especially with the shadowed black stencils). The Speed Hunter sheet did not include walkway decals so I ended up having to airbrush them and I really struggled with getting them sprayed on evenly and somewhat symmetrical due to the funky curves on the fuselage. I think that is where I lost steam on with the bird. Anyway, I brought it out of cold-storage today and worked on the walkways and got them straightened up. I have some touch up work to do on the camo and some more work on all the sub-assemblies but I am going to try to get this one resurrected.
Best wishes,
Ian
