It's quite a while ago since I built a forgotten tank. With 2021's first group build lurking behind the horizon I want to learn and experiment a lot more on finishing abandoned vehicles. I went for the cheap but yet popular kit, Italeri's M47 Patton. I know there's also the fantastic Takom M47 but as I said it's all about experimenting this time so I won't sacrifice a beautiful and expensive kit. If I succeed I'll put it on a simple base. There's also the bin if I totally mess things up. There will be some minor cutting, carving, amputating etc. involved in this thread. The more sensitive builders be warned ! I've downloaded a small collection of abandoned M47 Patton tanks and I'll try to slap on the rust effects, graffiti, destressed paint layers... I find interesting. ONLY FOR REFERENCE PURPOSES! ONLY FOR REFERENCE PURPOSES! ONLY FOR REFERENCE PURPOSES! I'll remove the molded on mudguards as the M47 looks big and heavy without them. Only the right track will be used, the left side will clearly show the running gear. Best regards.

The mudguards were cut away. I like this better, looks a bit like Popeye showing his biceps

Cool kit for a cool build Guy . Can't wait to see you scratch those skeleton tracks and don't forget the rifling in the split barrel Better put my coat on, the naughty step is getting chilly now

Great idea and great kit to use Guy. I'm thinking a similar thing myself so will be watching this progress with great interest.

Today the left side of the running gear was reworked to alter the look from new to damaged, worn and abandoned. Pete, did you scratch my tracks mate?

Pete then I'll probably stick to the spaghetti tracks. Boots I appreciate that a lot but...rustmeister ? I'm rusty at making rusty stuff that's true.

Ordered myself a set of Friul tracks for this build, I always break something while putting them feckers on.

Frillies will be the perfect tracks for this Guy . They will be a lot easier to show the huge sag and even have a split track that has come off and laying twisted to one side

What you said Paul fella. Well the experiment has be-gun! I'm keeping things simple during this adventure so I used the two kit barrel halves and smoothened the gun out with a little help from Tamiya putty white diluted with Tamiya laquer thinner and sanding paper. With a dabbing of Tamiya thin cement I created a tadd of structure in the gun mantlet. It was then worked with Tamiya putty and a palette knife for extra texture. Three mists of rust brown with a drop of clear diluted with laquer thinner were then sprayed on.
I sprayed on hairspray (normal fixation, the strong fixation doesn't come off easily) and sprinkled in a small amount of fine salt. These two make a nice combo to get that paint worn.
The colours were sprayed on then... Hope they work with me when I start the rubbing and picking...
That worked ok, I'm not a rust Jedi but Rome wasn't built in a single day so let's dream on ! Sorry for the blurry-ish image.
The applied paint layers were then protected with a coat of gloss clear. I gently dabbed on a bit of bright white with a sponge. There's no washes involved yet. Micropainting extra texture to enhance the effects with the washes. Today another layer of hairspray and much lighter green were applied onto the barrel and the gun mantlet. This was, necessary to get more contrast in this part. Once the barrel was rubbed it got a coat of gloss clear. Oil washed consisting of ultramarine blue, burnt umber and burnt sienna were brushed on and partially removed with tissue, cotton swabs... to obtain more effects. I then micropainted on rust effects with oils.
