That is not a small update, the work on the engine is a huge update on its own

The engine looks the part Kari, it shows that it was built with patience.

Practiced chipping with the engine cowl. Started with black primer and then added aluminium base coat (A-Stand Aluminium which is very durable). Then sprayed 3 thin layers of Ammo Mig Scratches Effects from different directions. Next day I sprayed the final colour (a mix of Tami X-1 Black & some drops of XF-8 Flat Blue). After a couple of hours I started the chipping by wetting the surface and cratching with a toothpick & a rough brush. Fairly straightforward, but can it be repeated with the fuselage and wings? I am afraid of the paint peeling of like with the GT40 ...

Nice job,K 🙂 I would say if you followed the same sequence with the same products you would have the same results. 👍

Thanks guys!
I am just afraid that if/when I need to use masking tape on painted surfaces which have been treated with chipping fluid, there is a risk that the surface paint will peel of like it happened with GT40.

I have not had an issue masking over chipping fluid/hairspray areas. I use very low tack tape or Post-It Notes and keep it dry.

Just to make it sure so that I do not screw this one: you do first chipping and after that wash & other weathering stuff?

You are correct, Kari. If you go to page 4 on my French AU-1 build the weathering sequence is outlined, there. Very similar weathering appearance to Japanese WW2 aircraft, so the process can be about identical. mho.freeforums.net/thread/4922/hasegawa-48th-au-french-navy?page=4

Finally, some milder weather => proceeding with painting tasks. Sprayed the A-Stand Aluminium on the whole exterior to be followed by the chipping fluid + camo paint. Then some water & toothpick...
