At Paul's request this will be my first attempt at a SBS for how I approach (what some seem to call the "Dark" art) figure painting. There are many styles and personal interpretations (not all of which I like or understand) when it comes to figure\bust painting. You only have to have visited a show like Euro Militaire or its replacement to appreciate how many different styles and indeed fashions there are. My attempts are all based around personal preference and whether it looks right to my eye. So this is the subject primed with "Chaos Black" and I promise I will try and take you through the journey step by step. Looks like it's been carved from a lump of coal. So the journey begins and I hope it helps others to see that really there are no secrets dark or otherwise and hope it might encourage others to give it a go. More soon I hope, but don't expect quick progress this could take some time. Tim

For the flesh I will be using Andrea Color flesh set which consists of 6 bottles of paint as follows. 1 First Base - Light tone
2 Second Base - Dark tone
3 First Light 4 Second Light 5 First Shadow
6 Second Shadow
Having chosen the base colour light or dark you then use either 1 or 2 mixed with 3 to 6 to build up a range of dark to light flesh tones.
For Harper I have started with the darker 2nd base and applied 3 fairly thin coats to build up the base.
I will now leave this to cure and clear up any blemishes then possibly apply one more very thin coat before starting to map out the highs and lows. More later. Tim

Great so I need to go shopping again then . I have looked at those sets before, but never purchased any. I'll watch how this develops before deciding .

Hold on the purchase of flesh sets. Really not doing it for me at present and certainly not pleasing to my eye, all far to dark and unreal. So out with the "Fairy Powerspray" and as the title says, back to black. Need to reapraise where this goes and also the paints to be used.. Have 6 Vallejo skin tones to play with along with two GW flesh tones and a GW flesh undercoat.
More soon I hope.

No problem Tim . I had a look for those paints online today, and couldn't find any in Germany. The only site that still has them is the Andrea site. The price being €43 paint + postage from Spain, WTF .

OK, made my choices for the second attempt and will be using the following Vallejo model color's. Flat Flesh - as base Light Flesh Medium Flesh Dark Flesh Might need some red and blue mixed in in places but will let you know as it develops. In reserve and available are Basic skin tone and Sunny skin tone. Started with flat flesh. Hairy sticks at the ready and let's hope things go better this time.

Bit more done. Decided to block in the eyes. For this I used light flesh as white is to harsh. Next I started to fix the first highlight's with a 50:50 mix of base flesh and basic skin tone. More soon. Tim

Next first shadow. A mix 50:50 Base flesh and Medium flesh. The digital eye gives harsh contrast but mark I human eyeball is more forgiving and the face is begining to take shape. Much happier with the direction this is now going and more soon. Tim

Tim I take it you are using a hairy stick for this ? I remember Ghosty telling me to use the AB and paint blowing downwards . I found this just ferkin impossible to do, even with a 0.2mm nozzle and all sorts of different pressures. This looks to me, as if you have base coated the face with skin tone and then you picked out the cheeks, tops of the eyebrows, top sides of the forehead and top of the nose with a fine brush . This is certainly a good schooling session indeed fella

Thanks Boots, much appreciated.
Paul,
You got it, hairy stick all the way. Ghosty and a few others lay primer on with an "AB" and then use white sprayed from above and black from below to define the highs and lows before starting proceedings with the hairy stick. I am using one of the pictures I took of the head in primer to see the highs and lows and painting them in from that.
I will now have a little break from this and let it cure before the next phases. Also gives me time to get on with some proper paying work

Tim just what scale is this? It certainly isn't 1/35, but maybe 1/16 or larger?

Lovely work so far, Flesh tones are a nightmare to get right. Not sure if this will be of help to anyone, its a page I use with painting, it is predominantly ethnic skintones but I find the Mediterranean tone works well as it gives that weathered tone that sets in after a period out in the elements. www.coolminiornot.com/articles/content.php?1310-ethnic-skintones
