Thanks for all the comments, gents. I got the burner cans and the boat-tail of the 'Vark painted using a mix of Vallejo Metal colors and my last remaining Model Master Metalizer colors. I used a mix of Steel, Silver and Burnt Iron. Following that, I sprayed some areas with Tamiya Clear Red to give the metal a burned, distorted look. I also made some intake and exhaust covers out of sheet stock and these will be painted red. Hopefully I will be decaling soon. Regards, Ian

Those burner cans look terrific..........nice idea with adding the touch of clear red Thanks! All the Tamiya Clear colors really work well on natural metal areas. It's really a cool way to get that burned metal look. Regards, Ian

I applied the Pledge Floor Wax for the gloss coat so I will let that cure this week and should be ready to decal next weekend. I will be using one of the original Microscale Decal sheets (yes, the blue envelope ones) for F/FB-111s that I picked up from a vendor at a show. All the sub-assemblies are built and painted so I think we are in good shape. Best wishes, Ian

Paul, Steve, Boots, Robbo and Jeff thank you for the kind words. I got some more done on this and I think HobbyBoss is going to make me battle to the finish line. On a plus note, the Microscale Decals, which are probably thirty years old, went on perfectly. They actually laid down better than some much newer Aeromaster and Eagle Strike sheets I have used recently. However, the HobbyBoss stencils were horrible and Solvaset and lacquer thinner (in some spots) had to be used to get rid of silvering. I should have caught this earlier but HobbyBoss completely bombed (ha!!!) the bomb bay door configuration. I reposted the original bomb bay photo below and this is completely wrong. HobbyBoss instructs you to install that piece so it hangs down perpendicular to the ground and then you add a third piece which folds inwards and is parallel to the bottom of the airplane. Not even close!! The third piece is not even needed. The bomb bay piece pictured below actually needs to be cut in half and that second piece needs to fold inwards to be parallel with the bay. So I trashed the third piece and then cut the bomb bay door in half. Of course that screwed up my graffiti application so I had to strip that and do that over. I then installed one door to hang down and the second piece folded inwards, flat with the fuselage bottom. In addition, the actuators were too long because HobbyBoss molded the door too big. The actuators had to be cut down as well. I then installed the afterburner cans and boat tail and once again, the fit was a total nightmare. The lip of the burner can did not fit inside the fuselage so that had to be removed and then the cans were just butted up against the fuselage (after I put a rod in the fuselage to stretch out the fuselage). The boat tail did not fit and I had to trim the slot down so the tab would fit. My intake covers did not fit and had to be trimmed down, probably because I used the spare Zhengfu intakes as a template and one of these kits dimensions must be off (or both). I still have to sort out the correct antenna for the SAC FB's because the HobbyBoss instructions are not even configured for this variant of -111. The instructions are for a D, E. or F.....or all of the above and just a mess. I am getting close but I am still amazed at how horrible this model really is. However, kudos to Microscale on their old "blue envelope decals" though. Brought back memories from when I started in the hobby. Best wishes, Ian
