What do you mean by sealant? I’ve never heard of it, hence my experiences of colour bleeding.

What do you mean by sealant? I’ve never heard of it, hence my experiences of colour bleeding. When you apply the masking tape to create the stripes, seal the edges by painting them with the base colour. In this case yellow. Any areas that bleed will then be sealed and when you apply the black you should get a nice crisp line.

Just a quick update. Air brake done and looks ok. Curvy tape arrived so onwards and sideways. Will be giving this the gouache treatment so hopefully all the nice detail will pop and bring it to life. Tim

Sorry to say this has been ditched.
Problem was the yellow and black stripes. First they bled then once I had sorted that, on the next attempt something reacted adversley and the paint turned to sheite. Ok thinks I, I will have to resort to the decals. Now I have to say I have never come across decals like em. They cracked and split like thin sheets of ice and as for settling .................. no chance.
I have had two occasions with this where things went pear shaped but managed to get it back on track. Not this time, fecked the whole thing up good and proper, and for the first time in I don't know how long I am starting to question my ability or continued participation in all things modelling.
It's a shame really because I like the beast but, without wings, it has no chance of getting finished. And I would imagine that the cost of replacement parts is such that I might just as well buy another one and start again.

That is really bad news. But as Pete said it happens now and again. Whatever you do, don't quit Tim. You are too good to let yourself get beat by one kit .

That’s a real bummer but don’t give buddy. Trumpeter decals are known to be the worst in colour and quality to the point where I’ve already binned the kit decals in the 1/24 Spit I’m starting soon. Don’t let their shite put you off!
Soak the wings in a strong solution of clothes washing powder overnight, it removes any paint that hasn’t cured after a scrub with a toothbrush. Then give the stripes another go.
Keith, who used to be on another site and built the best cars I ever seen and told us how he painted go-faster stripes! Start by spraying the yellow. Then mask and spray the yellow again as his seals the edges of the tape. Then paint the black. Let it dry then run a new blade down the edges and remove the tape.

Tim, sorry to hear that as your work on this was really excellent. Yes, Trumpeter decals are hard to deal with. If I am dealing with kit decals, especially an older sheet, I learned the hard way to always clear coat the sheet with gloss or flat lacquer as this will keep even the most garbage decals together. But as Steve pointed out, I don't think it's a write-off; just a setback. I think if you can get the decals off you would be in a position to refinish the wings. Also, if the stripes are going to be an issue there are plenty of non-Suez Wyvern options with no stripes.

Marco, Pete, Paul, Ian, Tommy & Steve, Thanks for the comments much appreciated. After a little consideration I have decided to buy the full kit again even if I only use the wings. I think we can agree the wings are bolaxed. But it would be a shame to bin the rest which had reached this stage. Once the replacement arrives I will go stripes first and make sure I do them properly this time. Tim

Sounds like a plan Tim, the wings have taken a beating. At least you’ll save your other work so far and have parts for a maintenance dio!

Good call, Tim. Definitely worth continuing the project, especially with all the work you have in the interior. Your skills are top notch; sometimes we just get hit with &@%#y luck on a project.
