Thanks chaps, some answers, Bert the ratchets are from Djitis productions, N0 35028 ratchet straps.
Marco, Guy it's common practice for the British army to use these drums as stowage as they only have fuel drums in place if deployed for conflict. They are not allowed to have fuel drums in place for training. Because there's only limited space for stowage on chally 2 it makes sense to utilise old drums for stowing gear as the brackets are almost never removed. Mostly they stow tarps and camo netting in them. There are many variations and the half open drum is one I have seen and wanted to model.

The now so called Royal Lancers, stow the ammunition in there. The cooled ammunition charge bins in the vehicle (8°C by the way) are full of beer
