1/48th Italeri RAAF P-40N

Nice mottled green.

I made some progress on the P-40 and she is almost ready for the gloss coat for decals. I applied some Tamiya Smoke to the panel lines which will be a little less prominent after the decal gloss and final flat coat goes on. I added some exhaust stains behind the stacks. I airbrushed on some Vallejo Dark Rust and then sprayed the center of the streak with some MIG FS3622 Grey. I also added some powder residue around the ammo bays on the wings which was created with Vallejo Dark Rust as well. I added a base coat to the exhaust stacks using Vallejo Dark Rust, again, but I am going to add some more paint layers and maker them more rusted and burnt. I found out the fin cap on this scheme was also blue so I sprayed that using some MIG Sea Blue. The .50 cal baddies in the wings were drilled out using a very small pin vise bit. Next will be some washes and bare metal chipping.

Really impressive paintwork fella. The decals will make this one stand out

I finally got back to the bench as I had been down a few days with an ulcer on my cornea. Apparently some type of rare allergy that caused it. Very painful but clearing up with eye drop steroids. I made some progress on the P-40 over the past few days. I wanted the ordnance to look very dirty and weathered as these things get pretty beat up laying around these austere SW Pacific airfields. I sprayed the bombs with Vallejo Olive Drab but I wanted them to look very faded and mottled. I tried a technique that I saw on YouTube. I shot some Mission Models Faded Olive Drab through a Scotch-Brite pad, at high pressure, on to the bombs and the result was a nice patchy, spotty finish. I also got the windscreen and canopy parts sprayed. My plan is to use the kit windscreen and the Squadron vacu-form canopy hood and rear section. The prop spinner and blades were painted as well. I just have to add the white overspray near where the blades poke out from the spinner, per the reference photo. The plane was then sprayed with Pledge Floor Care to prep for the decals. Stay tuned..........

Thanks for stopping in, gents! I got the decals applied this morning and no issues as they went on very well. I just have to wrap up a few sub-assemblies and we will almost be ready for some flat coat.
